Definition of Undercut in Haircutting
Definition: Undercut
by POPSUGAR Beauty 7
When you hear the term undercut, your mind might wander back to that decades-ago style where the top layers of hair cascaded over shaved layers underneath. You might also think of the goofy bowl style of Jim Carrey in Dumb & Dumber.
In today's terms, however, undercutting is more about sculpting beautiful texture and movement by shortening layers underneath the hair. And it's not just for funky styles, either. While many undercuts are razored for a shattered effect, more conservative styles can benefit from the bulk-removing benefits of hidden shorter layers, which actually coerce the hair to hang more gracefully. Call it haircutting magic, if you will.
