Do You Cut Your Hair at Home?

At a hair convention where most of the attendees were cosmetologists, I stopped at a booth to check things out and chuckled. Hanging for all to see were t-shirts emblazoned with the phrase: "Don't start bitchin' cuz you cut it in the kitchen!"

That got me to thinking about my own snip-happy ways. Yeah, every now and then I get bold at home and do a little trim — often to the dismay of my stylist. How about you?

My mom used to cut our hair every now and then when I was little, and then I started trimming my own bangs when I was about 10, and I did a pretty good job! My little sister and my best friends started allowing me to cut their hair when I was in middle school. I've cut my own hair plenty of times, too. In high school and college I had a lot of friends who would let me cut and/or color their hair - guys and gals! I can work with lots of different styles and lengths, and I only ever made one girl cry, and she said she almost always cries after a haircut anyway, so does that really count? The only head of hair that I've encountered that I simply can't cut right is my husbands. Grr! He's got thick, straight hair, and lots of it 'cuz his head is HUGE. I can never get it right, but then again, neither do the stylists he goes to. But I love cutting my own hair and right now I'm trying to grow it out long enough to try an (upside down) pony tail haircut method. Should be fun!

I've been cutting my own hair for the past 10 years. I had a very bad salon experience and decided to never trust anyone with my hair again. The woman had NO idea how to cut curly hair, and at the time everyone was getting layered cuts. My mom and I both asked her if she knew how to properly layer and cut curly hair and she said she "did it all the time". I left the salon with a mullet. As if being in 7th grade wasn't awkward enough, I was that girl with the mullet. Awful.

I only trim the ends if needed and or if I can't make it to get it cut.

I cut my own hair regularly from about age 17 - 22.. I go to someone now, having found someone I can actually trust (a shoddy salon cut was why I started in the first place!) but I do trim my own bangs in between visits to the salon.

Yes and i do a better layering job than any hairdresser can.

If i'm getting a change in haircut I go to the stylist, but if I'm just maintaining my haircut I do it myself (I tend to have simple haircuts so it's fairly easy to maintain). I'm trying to grow my hair out at the moment so cutting my hair only consists of trimming my ends and maintaining my bangs. I also colour my hair at home. I just can't rationalize spending all that money at the salon when i can do just as good a job at home. I'd rather spend the money elsewhere.

I cut my bangs all the time, because thet grow so fast. But in 2002 i had elbow length hair. And one day I got bored with it, grabbed a pair of scissors and cut it to a messy, layered bob. My mom was shocked, and she sent me to the hairdresser to " make it prettier". The following year, I cut it even shorter, like Rihanna´s length. Now I have my hair long again and I like it, but I´m tempted to cut it short again.

I cut my own hair sometimes, sometimes I let a pro do it. I've also cut a LOT of my friends hair, short long curly straight. It's fun to play with hair. But I don't agree that curly hair can be perfect without products. I have curly, naturally frizzy hair. It's super healthy but the curls don't curl together, I've had it cut a hundred different ways but I still need some cream and stuff to tame it a bit.

I always get rid of my own split ends. Occasionally my stylist misses bits at the back which drives me nuts.

I used to cut my hair when it was short, now that it's halfway down my back I can get the ends right. I do still cut my boyfriend's hair though. Plus I trim split ends and bangs all the time.

I used to love getting my hair cut. Now it is FAR worse than going to the dentist. I've had nothing but bad professional hair cuts in the last 5 years. After the last "professional" cut that wound up as a cross between a Dorothy Hamill and a bowl cut (it was going to be a modern bob), I've given up on the local stylists. I learned how to section, bevel, etc... and give myself a far better cut than I would pay for.

i enjoy giving myself different layers if i feel like something different, never take too much off and im always happy with how it turns out =)

I always go to my stylist; never like any DIY haircuts. If I see 1 or 2 horrible split ends then I just snip those two off. I do not go beyond those two strands. My stylist knows how to work with my hair and give me the style that suits my needs.
