My friend works for a company that manufactures all sorts of beauty products. Somehow she got her hands on an old training manual, and boy, is it a treat. Some of the antiquated rules are as follows: hair should be worn above the shoulders, makeup should never be dark, and lipstick and nail polish should always be tastefully done in a coordinating color. It all sounds a little old-fashioned to me, don't you think?
This got me to thinking about my own personal nail polish matching habits. Somewhere along the line, I felt the need to always make my fingernails complement my toes somehow, even though I know it's probably just a little quirk of mine. Tell me about your coordinating/non-coordinating ways.

Am I one of the only women out there who never put colour on their nails / toenails?
No, sunday, I have a friend who doesn't do it for religious reasons.
My toes and fingers don't always match 1-1, but there will at least be some odd correlation between my toes and fingers.
I'm a little more adventurous with the colors of my toes than my fingers.
Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. It all depedns on what colour I'm doing my toes. I only do light colours on my nails because if they chip you don't notice as much.
sometimes... it depends on my mood. often, i will use a wild color on toes, and a neutral on nails.
Mine usually don't match. I have on hot pink on my toes and gray color on my finger nails right now, so I definitely don't match.
I don't not paint my nails for religious reasons, I've just never found painted nails particularly interesting or nice to look at. I like clear varnish and neat nails, but that's about it.
no, I'd never match, it's so old-fashioned. I'd rather have dark red or bright pink on my toes, or maybe brown and then play around with colour on my fingernails
It either matches or coordinates, like a lighter pink fingernail with a hot pink toenail.
I never paint my fingernails unless I have a VERY special occasion. But my toesies are always painted in some wacky color or another.
only in the winter when i wear dark nail polish. occationally in the summer but mostly the fingers are french
I never match my toenails and fingernails. It's not that I'm opposed to it. I can only wear certain colors without looking weird because of the shape of my fingers and toes, and they happen to not coordinate at all.
Yes, but I don't paint my toenails that often.
I rarely put color on my fingernails, as it chips too easy - but I usually have some color on my toes, right now it's coral.
I never match- it is always a light neutral shade on my nails (makes for easier upkeep) and a fun, bright or dark shade on my toes. I would only match them if I was getting a mani/pedi for a special event like a wedding.
That use to be a rule I thought I needed to follow after I heard someone say it on a TV show once, then I decided it was silly and I can do whatever I want.
yeah hardly ever do i match em. i ALWAYS have my toes painted but rarely have my fingernails painted. its too much of a hassle and they chip too easily.
I used to match my toes & fingers but I so rarely wear polish on my hands anymore that it's kind of a moot point for me.
I used to do my nails all the time, but I didn't do my toes. If I do have my nails done then yes, they match because my mom gives me a mani+pedi. Usually all my nails are bare.
No, by the time I'm finished doing my nails, i don't want to do my toes. vice versa.
I dislike painting my fingernails. I think it's ugly to be completely honest, unless it's french manicure or super natural color. Toe nails are a different story. I rarely paint mine, but I will on occasion. French mani/pedi's are my preference!
I buff my fingernails and paint my toenails. Polish only lasts 2 or 3 days on my fingernails before it is in bad shape, at best.
Sometimes they match. But usually I have a colour on my toes and clear on my fingers.
My toes are always bright and/or bold, but sometimes my nails are bare or more conservative.
I almost never match.
I'm 50/50 - right now I don't match, but I did match for my birthday a few weeks ago...I'm not opposed to wearing a wild color on my fingers, so I have my pick of colors.
ok, i'm officially shocked! i would have thought that almost 100% of people would have their fingers and toes matching. wow. lol i can't imagine not matching the two... i guess i'm a weirdo. lol
sometimes, but when my toes and my
nails dont match people complement them
more.
I like to match my colors. I'm a little monkish.
I would never match my fingers to my toes, but I'm obsessed with them both always being painted. They always complement each other, and I love coming up with cool new combos!
complement - yes. Match - no. I rarely wear nailpolish on my hands only occasionally, I prefer the nude shade look for everyday. But I usually have it on my toes; I never leave home without fixing my nailpolish if I'm weariong open-toes shoes.
I love hearing all of your takes on coordinating/not coordinating the polish!
Well I currently have Lime green toenails with fuscia polka dots and purple fingernails so I would say no.
Don't wear color on my nails, toes are always in tip top shape with a vibrant color.
I always pick bright, fun colors for the toes. For my nails, I keep it low-key with a short nail and a sheer pink (think french mani without the fussy white line)
Usually they somehow coordinate but not match - usually I go for brighter toe nail colors! Love bold and bright colors!
I do coordinating shades, but never the same exact shade.
Similar to a lot of people above - I'll do similar or coordinating shades on my finger nails and toe nails, but my toe nails will be more bold. A neat trick is to use the top coat of the bolder color on my finger nails for when I want to keep them more subtle.
i dont really match but i like it coordinated.. and not clashing with each other.. but if i have a french then i'll probably have my toes match my outfit or whatever i feel like using
I always have a french pedicure and french manicure. Its classic and goes with everything. I am liking the lime green and fuschia polka dot nail polish americanbeanhead
No, I do not match the color however I usually stay in a color range or have it go with one another. Ex: black on toes, navy on hands; burgundy on toes, bright red on hands; dark plum on toes, wine, medium lavender or a deep pink on hands. That way it works together however doesn't look matchy-matchy.
Yes, they always match for this reason: I use the same polish on my toes AND my hands. Two differing colors on the toes and fingers bug me for some reason. I can do a pattern if I had the patience for it. Right now, I have Nicole Stics by Opi on (I have the top coat and a pink color that I can't remember the names to).
Thanks aistea311, I actually stole the idea from Solange awhile back haha.
I usually paint my toes OR my fingers, but fingers are such a pain..I find a good polish like TOMA lasts a few days on my toes, and I like how it looks.
On fingers, between cooking and guitar and piano and typing all day at work, I just feel..meh..about painting them, its constant hassle, one chip and it looks horrid, and I rarely have the time to keep them perfect so I just don't bother!
If I do, then no, they never match - but they won't really clash either...I tend to always wear a really natural pink, a clear true red, or sometimes for fun, this really cool metallic midnight blue on my hands (Finland is into black and blue nailpolish, its pretty much mainstream here).
Matching to me would be overkill somehow.
Judging by the fact that I have a shimmery darkish lilac on my toes now, and a matte aqua blue on my finger nails... I'd hazard a guess I don't set too much store by matchiness.
I never have the same color on my fingers and toes - I actually intentionally always make sure that I have two different colors just because I hate matching and because I love nail polish so much that I can never pick just one color. it's funny though, because I remember when I was like 11 (I've been painting my nails since I can remember, my mom noticing that I painted my fingernails and toenails two different colors and finding that surprising. so, I thing it's just a generational/societal thing - it's not that crazy of a concept.
I wish I had the eye to coordinate my shades though...
For special occasions I'd consider it or at least a darker shade on toes and lighter on fingers but I wouldn't do it for every day. It's no fun that way.
Well.... sometimes when i do not match my fingertips with my toes i get kinda uncomfortable... but i try to stay in the basics if i'm going to paint them different. If i had my toes in red, i stay in french manicure, and backwards. But i love to try kinky colors on my toes all the time... so it worries me what to do with my hands if i have a crazy purple in my toes =S
