Does The Pill Help Reduce Your Acne?

Recently, the FDA issued a warning letter to Bayer, maker of the birth control pill YAZ, for misleading consumers into thinking the drug can help remedy most, if not all, pre-menstrual symptoms. While YAZ is approved to treat moderate acne vulgaris, the commercials suggest that the drug can treat all acne problems, which is a no-no, says the FDA. So, this got me to thinking about The Pill in general, which helped clear up my case of jawline acne. What says you on this topic?

the pill dosent help acne, been there done that. it dosent work. and i ahve had ance for like 3 years, and i realise, i dnt care coz there jsut pimples, there not life threating. ppl shud c u from the inside not the outside

last year i went off of yasmin to see if it would make my energy levels better + i broke out while off of birth control. then, i started yaz + my bacne/chest acne cleared up. my face does have flareups, but it is better than when off of birth control. :)

I don't remember but seems to me that birth control did help. Now I can't take birth control. But I have heard the anti-depressant Lexapro sometimes makes breakouts much better. Go figure. :shrug:

I had horrible cystic acne all through my teens. I never had pimple's... tho. Odd I know. Just those horrible below the skin things... But I started on the pill and within 2 weeks I never had another cystic acne issue again. It was ridiculous how clear my face got within that two week period. That one reason alone I never missed a pill. I was so happy to have a decent complexion. And had anyone told me at 15 that my face would have cleared up if I was on the pill, I would have demanded to be put on it then. haha!

My BC helped a bit, but the only thing that had a significant effect was Accutane.

YAZ made me break out in deep, painful cystic acne all over my face (and caused some pretty heinous side effects beyond that, too). it's one of the worst things i've ever done to my skin.

The pill made my acne worse. I had a lot of problems on the pill. It wrecked havoc on me -- physically and psychologically. I tried three brands. I finally stopped taking it. It took my body several months to recover, and be back to normal. For adult acne, the best treatement for me is retin-a. It's a topical gel. I have peaches-and-cream skin, and I'm one of those women who wear no make-up, just sunblock. I've been approached by two women asking me what foundation and powder I used. They loved my "make-up." Imagine their shock when I told them I wasn't wearing any. :)

The pill worked for me. I had been on the pill for years. I tried different ones, but used the Ortho Cyclein most of the time and it really did help tremendously with my acne and cramps. I used to have bad acne and the pill was the only thing that helped. It wasn't until my late thirties before I quit taking the pill. By then the oils in my skin wasn't as bad and hardly ever broke out. I am now 43 with no acne. Ladies, you may have to try different kinds of the pill to see which one may or maynot work for you. Not everyone can adapt to the pill. Also, I hate to say it, but most women will have acne until they are in their late thirties. But it won't be as bad as it is in your early teens and twenties. The bright side of it is that the oils in your skin will keep you from aging and you will look younger than your age as you get older. Providing you don't have alot of sun damage.

My Yaz helped tremendously. I've had acne most my life, and now I don't have any really besides the week I get my period.

I used to always have huge whiteheads on my cheeks and I'm in my thirties. I had been using RetinA and Azelex for years but at the beginning of the year I decided to do whatever it took to get rid of the acne. On the advice of my derm I got microdermabrasion (5 sessions) and 2 mini-facials from the facialist it at my dr's office. I also went on Yas. I still use the prescriptions but I haven't had a breakout in months. So I can't say it was all due to the Yas but I think it helped.

I've never suffered from an acne condition thankfully, but I'm sure the Pill helped keep my skin even clearer.

my birth control gave me acne. i used to get a few pimples here and there when i wasnt on birth control, now i cant seem to get rid of the acne that has taken over my face. it seems to be getting worse lately too.

Faylinn--have you tried other options besides the pill or different levels of hormones? Ortho Evra worked amazingly well for me and I had nasty, nasty hereditary acne. I switched to a lower dosage called NuvaRing to help manage my hormonally-caused migraines. Different people need different levels of hormones. Some need more estrogen or progestin or need a balance. It's like an experiment. Normally, when you hit the right dose, the acne gets better.

The "yes" people are very lucky. My acne is on the bad side and my birth control didn't have any effect on them.

I'm on a progestin-only pill, called a "mini" pill--brand name Nor-QD. It has no estrogen in it and doesn't help with acne at all...

The pill just makes me insane. It turns me into a huge b*tch. It doesn't help relieve PMS symptoms and it doesn't help with my acne either.

Birth Control has helped me. But I still use a great facial wash to remove the acne I currently have.

I used to be on birth control and I thought they worked at controlling my occasional breakouts but my skin is much clearer now that I'm off all birth control! And the reason I went on it was primarily to clear my skin. Go figure!

My acne has gotten significantly worse. But that may be because I'm on the pill to regulate my hormones -- I don't get my period at all if I don't take the pill.
