We're happy to present this story from our friends at Allure:
During the summer (and in this heat wave especially), it's easy to fall into a lazy-ponytail rut. But trying something new with your hair is much more fun—just take it from Erykah Badu. The woman has endless hair creativity! Don't believe us? Check it out: Within the span of nine days, she's worn her hair wrapped into a twisty knot on the top of her head (at the Nice Jazz Festival in France); in an oversize, over-the-shoulder braid (at the Festival Jazz a Vienne in France); and in a billowy side ponytail (at the Tollwood Festival in Germany). See how to wear Erykah's best looks when you continue reading.
If you want to emulate Badu's exact styles, the last two are the easiest to recreate. If your hair isn't naturally thick, prep it with a medium-hold mousse (when damp) and tease the lengths (when dry) before styling. (If you go for the side braid, you can skip Badhu's exaggerated forehead swoosh for a more real-life look.)
But my hair is short, you say. I have no options. Wrong! You don't have to have long hair to switch up your look. If your hair is short, go for a sleek headband or barrette placed above one ear. Short, sideswept bangs (à la Michelle Williams and Ginnifer Goodwin) also look amazing with a pixie.
The real lesson here? It's fun to snap out of a hair rut, however you do it.
