Estée Lauder Launches a New Scent After a Decade

Fifty years after the arrival of the original Estée Lauder scent, Youth Dew, the brand is launching a new note in fragrance. Already a powerhouse in the beauty industry, the iconic company has been surprisingly absent from the fragrance arena in the last decade. Its last scent, Beyond Paradise, was released back in 2003. So, the arrival of Modern Muse this September is right on time. "This is the most important fragrance moment we've had in a decade," Jane Hertzmark Hudis, global president of the Estée Lauder brand, told WWD. "Modern Muse captures what it means today to be independent and confident in one's own sense of self and style."
The scent is a mix of jasmine and woodsy notes with lavender, lily, patchouli, and vanilla. It seems a coincidence that its spokeswoman for the campaign is Arizona Muse, who inked a deal with the brand last Spring. You'll notice Arizona wears a multitude of bows in the print and television spots (and there is one on the Modern Muse bottle itself). The bows actually honor the nine muses exalted by ancient Greek artists and philosophers. Arizona Muse plus the mythological muses yield one inspired perfume.

Estée Lauder and Lilly Pulitzer Are Bringing the Beach to Your Makeup Bag

In 2013, Estée Lauder is getting into the fashion business. For Spring and Summer, the beauty brand will offer a gift with purchase: a makeup bag featuring the designs of Lilly Pulitzer, part of a limited-edition collection. There will be eight different prints, each offered at a different retailer. But all have a beachy lilt. "Style is in our DNA, and bringing two iconic brands together to create something really fun and timeless made perfect sense to us," Jane Hertzmark Hudis, global president of Estée Lauder, told WWD. "This is heritage done with fun."
You'll be able to collect each of the limited-edition bags from stores like Dillard's, Macy's, and Bloomingdale's. The first gift-with-purchase set is available at Lord and Taylor now.
What We're Sweet On: Dual-Ended Mascara That's Twice as Nice
To create big, beautiful eyes for models on the catwalk, Estée Lauder Creative Makeup Director Tom Pecheux (who's a staple backstage at fashion week) often uses a lighter-toned mascara on the lower lashes, paired with a darker tone on the upper lashes. This lifting, brightening runway technique is exactly the impetus behind the brand's new Sumptuous Two-Tone Eye-Opening Mascara ($28).
With two different brushes and two contrasting colors, the effect you get is thick, richly pigmented lashes on the top, complemented by just a little something extra on the bottom. The rich black side (the larger of the wands) separates and lightly curls lashes without the flakes, while the lighter side (your choice of blue, brown, or plum) helps to open the eyes. The key is to make sure you're getting very close to the root on the upper lashes but just skimming the ends on the lower lashes. Otherwise, you've got yourself a baby-doll-like situation. But thanks to its smudge-free formula and multitasking benefits, this dynamic dual mascara is something you'll want to take with you practically everywhere this Summer.
Arizona Muse Inks a Deal With Estée Lauder
When your last name is Muse, modeling almost seems like an inevitable career choice. Named after the state in which she was born, 23-year-old Arizona Muse has stacked up an impressive résumé of work over her relatively short career including her newest gig as the new face Estée Lauder. "Arizona has quickly become one of fashion's most recognized faces, on the runway, in magazines. and in fashion campaigns," said the brand's style and image director, Aerin Lauder, adding, "She has the timeless elegance that will make her a fashion and beauty icon of her generation."
Arizona, who has walked runways such as Dior, Chanel, and Carolina Herrera, joins the Estée Lauder ranks alongside spokeswomen Elizabeth Hurley, Constance Jablonski, and Liu Wen. (Learn Constance's and Liu Wen's best beauty advice.) While Arizona has yet to photograph her first campaign, expect to see her featured in various skin care, makeup, and fragrance ads sometime over the next year.
What We're Sweet On: a Mediterranean Breeze of a Scent

You know warmer weather is on the way when eau fraiche scents, super light fragrances one step below EDTs, start coming out. We've already been cheered up considerably by the first Spring perfume to come across our desks, Estée Lauder's new Bronze Goddess Capri ($57). Capri is a flanker to Lauder's well-beloved Bronze Goddess fragrance (which is available again for a limited time, by the way), and if the original is something you remember enjoying, you'll want to give this one a sniff, too.
The difference between the two breaks down to this. If Bronze Goddess is Tahiti, with coconut and tiare jasmine notes, then Capri is definitely more like the Mediterranean isle that provided its name: fresh and slightly citrusy but rich with the scent of beautifully aged wood. A warm, slightly resinous base leaves you gently and beautifully scented for hours. Don't let the opening half hour of this one fool you; the drydown is what makes it worthwhile. So if you have a little patience, check Capri out before it goes back into the Lauder vault come September.
Estée Lauder Reveals a Mad Men Makeup Collection
The Mad Men franchise has already inspired a set of Nailtini polishes, and it's even been the impetus for two Banana Republic-backed collections. Now, the '60s-era show is getting a cosmetics line. New next month (just in time for the show's fifth season premiere on the 25th) comes a limited-edition, two-piece Estée Lauder Mad Men collection. See it up close here; just be prepared to get shaken and stirred.
