With colorful hues and Aztec-style prints, Mara Hoffman's Spring 2012 collection had a Mexican element woven throughout; and, her beauty team was on hand to mirror this aesthetic. Tigi's European creative director, Nick Irwin, worked with Hoffman to incorporate fabric from each models' clothing into high-ponytail plaits, creating a flow upward, elongating the face.
"I wanted something that was a little bit more individual, that didn't just look like a scarf in the hair," he explained. "I wanted it to almost look like the girls had it done themselves, but with a little bit more of a twist."
And while Irwin used small-teeth crimpers around the hairline to mimic the textured, jumbo braids atop the head (made using synthetic hair), you can easily modify this look to make it a bit more wearable for every day sans crimper or extensions. "Just put hair in a topknot and literally thread the material through the knot so you get this play on what I've done in the show," Irwin recommends. Then, spritz with Tigi's Work It hair spray ($14) for hold without the crunch.
