The Recession Brings Deep Cuts — in a Good Way

Are free haircuts for the unemployed a new trend? Last weekend, Christiano Cora salon in New York was offering gratis cuts to people who've lost their jobs, and I've heard stories about other stylists offering similar assistance. Since salons are one of the first businesses to suffer in an economic downturn, it makes sense that they'd be reaching out to their communities more — the stylists have some free time, and helping people now makes them loyal to you once they do get a job — but I still think it's a very kind gesture. Have you heard about free haircuts or deep salon discounts for people who've been laid off or hard-hit by the recession? And would you avail yourself of something like this?

I would love something like this. I lost my job in May, and prefer hair on the short (chin-length) side, so I need to visit the salon every 6-8 weeks. I held out for as long as possible after the layoff, and when I called my long-time stylist she offered to give me a 10% discount on the cut, but it still ended up costing ~$50 for a trim. Unfortunately, I don't have the luxury of spending that kind of cash every 6-8 weeks right now, so I'm holding out on another trim until I really really need one.

I'd challenge the idea that salons are one of the first businesses to suffer in a economic downturn. In fact, a number of recent articles and studies have shown it's quite the opposite, and few salons have suffered much at all. For some reason, even in bad financial times, women still want to look good. So even if they don't have as much money say, for a new purse, they are paying for haircuts and color.

what I want to know is why people who have lost or have had family member lose their jobs are still spending on expensive hair styling. no offense, but are color and highlights ever a necessity? the only reason I say this is because I have had a few friends who lost their jobs and the first things to go were aesthetics and unnecessary fashion purchases. it's called prioritizing people...

My hubby lost his job and my stylist knew about it and she's been charging me less lately until my husband finds a job. Like I only pay for a cut and color, instead of a cut, color and multiple shades of highlights. She's probably shaved about $50 off what she would charge.

Wow. The most I've seen is salons waiving the extra fee for long hair. Which was really good when I badly needed a deep condition and hadn't been paid much that week. Normally an extra $10 gets stuck on because of my long hair.
