What's the Grossest Thing You've Experienced at the Salon?

When it comes to salon visits, I can't say I've had too many disturbing moments. It was my fault that I let my stylist talk me into something I really didn't want, after all. And as far as sanitary conditions go, the grossest thing I've seen in the salon was probably watching stylists double-dip their hands into gallons of shampoo and conditioner with the top cut completely off. (I'm assuming it's so they could get every last bit of product a pump would have left behind.)

However, I've seen one too many episodes of Tabatha's Salon Takeover, and know that far worse things go down at the beauty shop. Most stylists really do take care to promote sanitary practices, but then there are a few that send us dialing the State Board of Cosmetology complaint hotline faster than you can say Seche Vite. I was once in hair salon for highlights. The flies were around; I asked the hairdressers to do something about it. But they didn't want to do it...they blamed on the food court. I didn't come back again.

Wow!! I'm so glad the only gross thing I've had to deal with was a woman who got a little overzealous with the cuticle nippers and made me bleed! (never went back, ow)

I went to a nail salon ONCE where the manicurist blew her nose, and then proceeded to use the snot rag as a wiping destination for the nail file, over and over.

I went for a wax and the room had bottles of dustly vodka right where i was laying down. And the sheet I was on was nearly gray from all of the dust on it! I've never been back. Plus when the women talked to each other they were obnoxiously loud

This isn't as gross as some of the earlier posts (!), but once after a haircut, the stylist removed the cape from me and I was covered in hair...obviously, NOT my own - ick. I'm guessing the hair had been washed before it had been cut, but it was really, hard to get out of my favourite sweater, even after washing. This is the same stylist who made me wait for over an hour to start my appointment on a different day and didn't even apologize. Needless to say, I've found someone much, much better, but my mom kept going to her and even bought her nice souveniers from her many vacations...

A friend of mine is a massage therapist. She has worked in numerous high end spas and she said it is amazing to see the amount of massage therapists that don't wash/change the sheets after clients. Eeeeeew.

This might be too gross to post... I started waxing when I was an exchange student in south america b/c the whole family did it. The little old lady who did the waxing had a sieve floating in the wax melter, where she would throw the used wax to recycle it. >_<

When my waxer came at me wielding a blush-style brush to powder my bikini line before the wax. It was pretty obvious she only had one of them! I recoiled and she was just like, "what?"

Maybe I'm been lucky or just don't see what's happening behind the scenes but the worse I've seen is the coffee maker and supplies next to the shampoo.

One of the salons I used to go to kept the water cooler, cups, coffee maker, tea, mugs,stirrers, creamer and sugar in the restroom. Gahhhhroooohhsssss!

When I was younger, I used to twist my hair to the point that I had bald spots behind my ears (you couldn't see unless you were a hairdresser - my longer hair covered). I moved to North Jersey, had to find a new hairdresser, went to a VERY upscale salon and when the stylist saw the bald spots she yelled to her co-workers, "Oh my God, you have got to see this!!" and proceeded to show my bald spots to everyone on the floor. Never went back... It wasn't gross but soooooo unprofessional.

I had my eyebrows threaded by a woman who had a cold. She proceeded to shape my brows with a string in her mouth while she sneezed and blew her nose, never washing her hands. Yeah, I haven't been back since.

when i think of my hair salon, the thing that pops into my mind isn't about anything sanitary whatsoever...it's about how one time i saw this family in the waiting room (2 parents and a kid who was about 8 or 9) and the kid was all over his parents, like snuggling them, on his moms lap the entire time, acting like he was about 2 years old when he was almost 10...it was ridiculous and was weirding me out

Ahh...I worked at a salon for three years. If I exposed some of the gross things that go on in the salon/spa...you may never return. Haha. So I'll keep them to myself!
