Have You Ever Said to a Stylist, "Do Whatever You Want?"

Based on the various conversations I've had with hairstylists over the years, there's nothing they like to hear more than these following four words: "Do whatever you want." It's such a liberating statement for both parties involved. The stylist gets to express his or her creativity, all while the client gets a truly customized treatment. A lot of you said you've had a stylist talk you into something you really didn't want, but I'm asking you this: have you ever told a stylist that she can do whatever cut or color she chooses?

I wanted to get a new haircut for myself as a reward for something I'd accomplished. I had a deep discount coupon to a fancy place. The stylist was young and she looked hip and stylish - I figured she might have some great ideas for my hair, so I told her to do whatever she wanted, just not go too short, i.e. above the shoulders. (It was a few inches below my shoulders.)SHE GAVE ME A MULLET.Why would you do that to someone??? I mean, it wasn't an all-out, totally-short-on-top mullet, but it was left long in the back & neck and everything else layered short... mulletized. This was 2007, by the way.My lover kinda liked it, said I looked like a rocker chick. Gee thanks.

Nope since a lot of stylist I frequent do not know how to style cut hair for $h!t. I know they make pretty good money and if they are passionate about hair, they would invest in class to do proper style cutting and coloring. Well what can you do? *shrugs*

I might say it with limitations. i.e. "Do whatever you want as long as it is a certain length," or "do whatever you want but keep it blond."

I got to a point 4 years ago where I didn't care. I had shoulder-length hair. I went to a new stylist, sat down, and said, do whatever you want. Even if you want to shave it all off, I don't care.I ended up with my short pixie-ish haircut, which I love. Best decision ever, I get complements constantly. All because I was OK with giving up control to someone else.

When I'm in the mood for a change and didn't know quite what I wanted, I've told my stylist to do whatever she thinks will look good on me, usually I'm pleased with the result.

I did and I was very happy with the result, it was a refreshing change of style for my hair, but I only told this to a hairsytlist I knew very well and was sure I could trust 100%, I would never let anyone else do whatever they like with my hair.

I'm in the middle of that now. I walked in to the salon and told the stylist, "My hair is short. I want it long. I don't want it to look terrible in that in-between stage. Fix, please?"I go to her every two months for a trim, a re-shape, and some new styling ideas. It's awesome!I'd done that twice before, and both times, I ended up looking gorgeous but paying a ridiculous amount of money. If hair didn't grow, I'd say those super expensive cut/dye/highlight jobs were worth it, but I couldn't afford the maintenance. :/

Yes and it didn't end well. I ended up with super short layers all over my head. Reminded me of the Brady mom's haircut.

Just once. Now I have a tuft (not bangs, mind you, which is what I believe she was going for). A tuft, such as that experienced when you are 5 and get gum stuck in your hair. Never again.

Well, I let my hair guy fix my former stylist's bad cut job, and I didn't really tell him what to do. That's as close as I'll get to saying "do what you want."

I intend to do that on my next trip to the salon. :) I haven't cut my hair since January last year. They could shave my head and I'd probably love it. Soo sick of my hair.

Yup, basically every haircut. I just specify i want it longer than shoulder length so i can pull it into a ponytail if i want, but aside from that they can do whatever

No. I always have something in mind that I want. However, I trust my stylist and she is so great that if I did tell her this, I know I'd be pleased with the outcome. The only thing that would upset me is if she cut too many inches off of my waist-length hair. :P

I said 'yes, and it didn't end well' because they never do anything dramatic enough for me... I think sometimes hairstylists are too safe because they're afraid of people complaining afterwards..

Sort of. When I had short, precision haircuts, I would come in with a picture of a haircut I wanted. The picture may show the front and sides. For the back, I would leave it up to the stylist. I've gotten some very cool styles for the back (precise, asymmetrical looks, graduated back that flattered my neck, etc.).Basically, I decided on my entrance (how my haircut looked from the front), and the stylist decided my exit (how my haircut looked from the back). I've gotten some amazing haircuts.
