Have You Given Up Salon Color?

It's not like I'm against boxed hair color. In fact, it has saved me many a dollar throughout the years, and there are some great formulations available. It's when the colors and tones stray too far from your natural roots that troubles arise. Not surprisingly, recent studies prove that an increasing number of women are coloring at home.

In fact, more and more well-known salon owners, like Frédéric Fekkai and Umberto Savone, are venturing out into the mass market, creating more affordable versions of high-end salon offerings. What about you? Have you been playing beauty shop in your kitchen these days or are your salon visits going strong?

I only do one color so it's easy to do at home. Also my hair is brown so it's not difficult to find a color that matches my natural hair color. The amount of time that it takes to do it in the salon combined with the cost just isn't worth it for me. Time is money!!!!!

After 7 years of highlighting my hair was entirely blond and made upkeep overwhelming. I finally decided to go brown and am so glad I did! I went brown at a salon but have been glazing my hair by myself. I cringe when I think about all the money I spent on my hair color before.

Sadly, I gave up salon hair color a while ago, as a nod to our budget. Garnier Nutrisse works pretty well, but it just doesn't have that same "oomph" as the salon color does. Overall, it's the best one I've tried though, with the most natural looking results.

Rockin my natural hair color for the first time in 17 years. Turns out it's not mousy gray, but reddish light brown, and lighter on top. Just like it was six years ago. Nice surprise.

always done it myself. that is for the last 2 years. before that it used to be salon but i'd always leave unsatisfied. now i found the perfect colour in garnier and i'm afraid to even try other brands so that i don't loose that perfect tone. if i go ton the salon they'd definetely change it. everytime i go there (cheap ir expensive ones) i tell them Rachel Greene caramel locks please, and they give my peach almost orange blonde. WTF? Thanks, i'm sticking to my garnier that gives my the shade i want every single time.

Funny you should ask! I've been toying with idea of semi-permanently dying my hair a shade close to my natural color to get rids of the blahness. I'm probably going to go for it this weekend. If I was going for a drastic change though or was trying to keep up an extreme color, I would definitely go to a professional.

I do my colour myself because I cant afford the salon. I end up saving around fourty bucks by doing it from a box.

Nope; me + a bottle of dye (or a highlighting brush) would equal disaster. I only get highlights every so often and it would cost major $$$ to fix a dye-job disaster than to just get it professional done in the first place.

Dying my hair is my only costly beauty luxury- so no. I get it dyed various shades of bright red and I won't do it myself. I get it done at the JCPenney salon and my lady is wonderful and reasonable.

I'd much rather do it myself, since I only change my hair color subtly. I also only like semi-permanent dye.

I used to go to the salon and started doing my own hair last summer... it was disastrous at first since I dyed my hair almost black instead of medium brown (who knew that dark brown on the box pretty much = black on colored hair! not this girl). Other than that one issue, I've been boxing it since then. I have thick dark hair that grows in very fast, which I am grateful for, but it does put a damper on the old wallet. $6 vs $60 for single process every 6 weeks equals 6 more big-azz margaritas this girl can drink (just kidding! I know the math doesn't work nor are the savings going towards margaritas but it's more fun to pretend.)

I always do my own (demi-permanent!!!) coloring at home. But I would never do permanent at home. I just like to brighten my natural blonde up a little in the winter. So I am not really changing the color, other than just a little.

i alwayyys do my own. i can do it just as well as a stylist can. but most of my family are cosmos so i learned from them- i just go to sallys and mix it up and apply it myself!

I did a fine job on my own I just got sick of the mess and the occasional strand of hair that some how didn't get enough color (had very long hair at the time). Mostly its the mess that keeps me from doing it at home. Plus sometimes it is just nice to get away for a couple of hours on my own.

I've always dyed my hair and I'm at the point where I know what works on me and how to do it. Some colors can be especially difficult (blues, and light colors like blonde) but if you just take your time and are sure to get good bleach and dye (and maybe a friend to make sure you didn't miss any spots!) you can get exactly the look you want for way less than half of what you'd pay at a salon.

Since my hair is brown and im blonde now it must be done by a professional. Ive tried so many times (and failed) to get a nice blonde at home. For me, its impossible.

no i haven't given it up i have just been going less frequently meaning that i have to deal with hideous roots..but that's the price i pay for not wanting to spend all the $$ on it.

Right now I'm rockin' my natural haircolor but I've always done it myself since I was 13 years old, actually! It's not a big deal. The results have always been bright, vibrant colors. I don't see anything wrong with using haircolor straight from the box.

I would never do it myself, I tried in college and the color always looked terrible, even going darker it was never a glossy beautiful color like the box tried to tell you it would be. sonya ina I also need to make an appointment soon! What I will do at home is a glaze between colorings, I LOVE the John Freida glazes, both the clear one and the one for brunettes. It makes my hair super soft and shiny and it's only $10 for a big bottle.

My friend Cassie just highlighted my hair for me, she does a bunch of my friends and my sister at home-does an amazing job too. Before that I hadn't colored my hair in yrs and prior to the I was a salon girl all the way. But with the economy how it is and just wanting a few highlights I let my friend help me out on this one and they look great.

I used to dye my hair myself all the time and had been doing so for years. I recently tired of it though so it's the salon for me. I try to keep it close enough to my natural hair colour that I can go without a touch up for about 6 months.
