Several centuries later, however, a young Queen Elizabeth I made red hair highly fashionable among her subjects. Her look was so popular that even her rivals attempted to imitate her gorgeous curls.

Elizabeth's (maybe) treasonous cousin, Mary Queen of Scots, famously wore her gorgeous red hair down and loose for her execution. Only once she'd had her head chopped off did it become clear, however, that the waves she was so vain about were in fact nothing more than a wig.
