It just takes practice. If you play around with it here and there, it'll come together. As others above have said, it definitely helps to use styling product before you start braiding, particularly if you have fine hair. If I don't use product, it turns out OK, but I get more flyaways.

I actually like this style of braid. But I was always intimidated by how complicated it looks. One day I will master it.

Bella85, this is actually a great style for thin hair, if it's long enough. If you'll braid it a little loosely, then put a bit of hairspray or texturizer on your fingertips and lightly pull on it- like you're trying to pull each half away from the middle- it makes it look fuller and thicker.

I prefer a looser Fishtail braid.

I always do fishtail braids in my hair. They're so much more interesting to look at than a normal braid and they're easy to do (as long as you have long hair).
