When I polled about changing looks for family visits, there were tons of comments asking to see this hairstyle that my parents hate so much. Since my mom's also an avid Bella reader, she begged me to share the backstory so I've scanned in a photo from Dec. 2000 for you to see for yourself.
Basically, I'd often come home for college's Christmas break like this because I couldn't deal with the blow drying or flat ironing during finals and I wouldn't bother to "do" my hair before the flight either. You see, since my father didn't like it, I knew he'd pay for a blowout once I got home (enter my ulterior motives, wink, wink). If you're thinking of recreating this style (later made more mainstream by Niobe in The Matrix Reloaded), get the tips when you read more.
- Starting with wet hair (leave-in conditioner optional), make a part parallel to your hairline from ear to ear. Pull the remaining large section of your hair to the side – you'll focus on the front part.
- Using a comb, make several parts perpendicular to the original part creating sections of hair. Twist each small ponytail until it coils on itself and secure with an elastic. This should leave several "knots" in a row.
- Divide the remaining section by making another parallel part, then perpendicular parts, and twist (i.e., repeat steps one and two) until all your hair is secured.
The difficulty of creating this style depends on how perfect you'll want the parts to be (I prefer a more free-form, zigzag pattern). At this time, my hair was a couple inches below my shoulders, but I've done it on a pal whose hair barely reached her chin. It can work with long or short hair; you'll just need to make more twists (and spend more time) to keep a smaller, consistent size the longer the hair is. While it's not a look I'd recommend for everyday, it is a great option for camping, hiking or other trips where grooming opportunities are limited.

Okay, what's the big deal? They're Bantu Twists. Not to be offensive or anything, but your parents need to buy themselves a clue.
1Wow nice tan! Ya I don't think I'd ever sport this style but to each their own.
2I did this in college, too, but called them "alien balls" -- looks cute!
3I don't see the big deal either - it's cute and certainly not something for them to initiate the conversation and ask you not to wear your hair this way!
4my mom used to do this to my sister's hair when she was in highschool, but we called it her bjork hair. still cute to me bella!
5Oh sure HoneyBrown that was not offensive at all...
6sigh.....there's always ignorance when it comes to culture and mainstream beauty. they are called bantu knots and are part of African culture and they are beautiful. fyi, when u untwist them, your hair has soft waves. great style!
7HoneyBrown didnt she just get through saying her mom was an avid reader of the site? That's not very nice thing to say
.
8oh and yep agree with curlygirlbeauty. I do this to my damp hair before i go ot bed and when I wake up in the morning take them out, run a bit of mousse through, and voila! lovely waves to my stick straight hair!
9Honeybrown, did you ever think maybe it's not a cultural thing but an age thing? If my parents or grandparents saw me with my hair like this they would probably be a bit taken a back because they have probably never seen it before. Nothing more than that. And I agree w/ missyd, please have some respect
10i love the hairstyle! i hope i can do it
will try this weekend, hopefully
11Gwen Stefani does this a lot. I'd like to try it for the waves afterward-a good blow-out break.
12I'm surprised this works on hair as long as yours was. That is good to know.
13BellaSugar you have beautiful eyes! Just curious, are you West Indian? As for the hair, I don't see the problem, especially for a collegian...
14I think I will try this and see if my hair gets a nice wave. It would save me sooo much time in the morning and it would be perfect for after the shower! Thanks for the new tip
15To those posters "offended" by my opinion, I am entitled to it. I think it's more offensive to change one's preferred style to appease parents or anyone else for that matter. I understand age and its mentality (which goes to further how I feel - usually, there are more issues that enhance that mentality). I think Bellasugar posted this story to hold a dialogue about it, not have every poster agree. If her mom's an avid reader, perhaps it'll change her viewpoint on the issue. The twists are cute. There are bigger issues to worry about.
16I like it!
Just curious, you seem to look a lot different here than you do in your look book pictures, which seem to show a much paler woman...
17Wow, Bella. I really like that style!
18My parents would flip if I wore my hair like that!
19I like doing this to my hair when I wash it. My hair is way past my shoulders and I normally do bigger twists in the back. In the morning I take them out, and great smooth waves and awesome body... Great break from the blow dryer and flat iron... But my mom does "flip" if I decide to go out in public like that...
20Bella you look gorgeous and it always takes some courage to scan in photos from almost 10 years ago!
21I've had this before but I had to take it out after a few hours because my friend did them too tight. I enjoyed them while I had them though =)
22I gotta try this over the weekend.
I reckon it looks awesome!
Also Sikozu from Farscape used to have her hair like this on occasion, You'd see her removing them at odd points during the show, like during a firefight.
23I think Bella's avatar would be so much prettier with darker eyes and a tan.
I think the hair is cute!
24Ooh! That style is adorable! I can't imagine why your dad hated it.
25I've always wanted to do this with my hair but it never seems to turn out for me...
26It's cute! If I tried it with my hair I'd have little frizzies sticking everywhere, but I like it on Bella.
27@True song: we're lucky enough to have a group of Bellas writing for us (:
28Love it!!!!
29No offense but they're your parents. Its not like you're a gangbanger or a drug junkie. You should wear whatever hairstyle you like and your parents need to accept your for who you are. I certainly wouldn't alter a hairstyle for a family member. There is such a thing as personal expression and its your right as a human being to wear what you like especially with the family.
30I would never wear this style, but to each their own.
Then, again, I should scan a pic of MYSELF from the 80's (now THAT was bad - HUGE BLONDE RATTED SPRAYED!)
31SO I gave this a go the other day. It took a while to twist my long hair into the knots, and I had trouble securing them properly. They were also very difficult to sleep in and the next day they'd half fallen out. While taking them out I combed my hair and noticed I'd got a huge case of the FRIZZIES! There were no kick ass waves to speak of, all I had was a lions mane.
Even the straightener didn't help much.
32yea my mom did this to my hair before when i was younger...it looked cute && its even better if you have semi-long hair
33I haven't done this in a while. I would do it now but it's too cold to be walking around with wet hair and an exposed scalp! Trying to cover my cornrows the other week was bad enough! Lol.
34Why didn't your parents like this style?
