How to Buy Makeup For the First Time

So many options! Here we go:

• Lipstick is the old standby. The long-wear formulas can dry out your lips, so start with a traditional lipstick. I always tell people to go to a MAC counter, where a makeup artist will help you find the best shade from their dozens of colors.
• Lip gloss is self-explanatory. You can layer it on top of lipstick or wear it alone. You don't have to splurge on this; L'Oréal glosses are great.
• Lip stains are ideal for a fresh wash of color that goes the distance. Benefit's Benetint deserves its cult following (and you can use it on cheeks, too).
• Lip liner isn't necessary for most. Unless you're dying to wear a bright lipstick, skip it.
• Lip plumpers make your lips look larger, but you don't need one in your first makeup kit.
