Many people look in the mirror and focus on the things they dislike about themselves. As a makeup artist for both celebrities and civilians, I continuously hear: My nose is too big. My lips are too small. My eyes are too far apart. And the list goes on. I’m no psychologist but it seems to me that we castigate ourselves unfairly at the risk of the bigger picture. The truth is, no one is perfect and we all have a feature that is unique and beautiful. At any rate I believe that imperfection is far more intriguing than symmetry. By embracing your own unique beauty, and enhancing the features you actually like, it’s possible to break free from this self-esteem trap. It’s an approach I use every single day. One of the most rewarding aspects of my job is providing women with the tools — and the vision — to reinvent themselves in a way they had never imagined. I try to enhance each person’s overall beauty by playing up their most striking attributes. Many times, since the client is too often busy concealing their supposed flaws, they can ignore their most appealing physical traits. Gorgeous almond-shaped eyes. Smooth skin. Or a pretty pout. Here are some simple tips that anyone can use to subtly transform their look. With any luck, they will help boost your confidence and minimize your self-doubt.
Skin Focus: Create a dewy glow using Hourglass’s llume Creme-To-Powder Bronzer Duo in Bronze Light ($40). Apply the highlighting shade from the arch of the brow down to the apples of the cheeks in the direction of a backwards C. Also apply down the bridge of the nose, and to the filtrum, that little dip above the center of the lips, to accentuate the shape of your mouth. Now each time the light reflects off your face it will create a luminous glow. Next apply the bronze shade to the apples of the cheeks for a pop of color.
Eye Focus: To accentuate your eyes, apply a strip of fluttery lashes. Try Shu Uemura's Smoky Layer ($28) lashes. If the lash exceeds the length of your eye, be sure to customize accordingly by trimming the outer corners. Apply a thin strip of adhesive to the base of the lash and wait a few seconds for the glue to adhere. Apply the lash starting at the inner corner, as close to your lash line as possible, and gently press down towards the outer corner until you feel a firm attachment. Skip the eyeliner — the strip of the lash is prominent enough.
Brow Focus: I like Temptu’s Airbrow Set ($85) for creating divine arches. The kit contains various eyebrow colors along with stencils for different brow shapes. One can use an airbrush or an eyebrow brush to apply. Put the stencil in place, apply a small amount of product close to the brow, and start filling in from the outside in. Clean up any excess with a Q-tip.
Lip Focus: Hold the endless shades of neutral gloss and try a vibrant scarlet lipstick instead. Start by applying a neutral liner over the entire lips to create a base for your lipstick. Using a lip brush, apply Revlon Matte Lipstick in Really Red 006 ($8) from the outer corner to the inner corner, and repeat from the other side. With lips this gorgeous, you can conquer the world.
