When it comes to grooming your eyebrows, you've probably already tried to tweeze, pluck, or thread them to perfection. And while this certainly works to ensure you avoid the dreaded unibrow, thick, shapely eyebrows have been seriously trending in the beauty world, so it's not necessarily a bad thing to leave those face-framers untouched.

However, whether you groom your brows or not, your arches can ultimately change your entire look when altered (even if it's just a smidge). Certain brow shapes have the ability to balance out your features; some can give your face an ultra-lifted appearance, while others can make you look more youthful — making brows, clearly, your most transformative feature.

Luckily, no matter what outcome you're looking to achieve when shaping your brows, there's no need to reach for tweezers to do it. We've rounded up the best makeup artist-approved tricks to create three very different brow shapes that you can DIY at home — no plucking necessary.

The Arched Brow

Who This Works For: This is a great option for round faces, smaller eye shapes, hooded lids, and those who want an overall lifted appearance.

What You'll Need:

  • brow pencil
  • highlighter
  • brow gel
Step One: Filling In and Brushing Out

Step One: Filling In and Brushing Out

First, celebrity makeup artist and beauty expert, Neil Scibelli, recommends defining the shape of your brows with a product like the Urban Decay Brow Beater Microfine Brow Pencil and Brush ($20), focusing on outlining along the hairs on the upper half of the brow, rather than the lower portion. With a light, feathered stroke, fill in the color a bit higher and darker than usual to accentuate where your natural arch is located. Be sure to extend the end of your brow with the pencil further down than you normally would in order to exaggerate the angle and length of your arch.

Then, use a gel product like the MAC Brow Set Brow Gel in Clear ($17), and brush the hairs up and out in the direction of your arch to keep the hairs in place and set them higher than they would usually fall.

Step Two: Highlight

To accentuate the appearance of an exaggerated arch, Neil recommends placing a highlighter product with neutral tones like the NARS Highlighting Blush in Albatross ($30) under the brow bone. By layering on this light-reflecting formula, you'll be able to fake the appearance of a dramatic arch without having to pluck away any extra hairs beforehand.

The Brushed Up and Straight Across Brow

Who This Works For: Try this if you have a long or oval face shape and want a more youthful appearance.
What You’ll Need:

  • brow pencil
  • brow gel
Step One: Filling In

Step One: Filling In

“Fill in the sparse gaps in your brow with a product like the Tom Ford Brow Sculptor ($45), using upward and outward strokes and filling in the bare section of your arch to make it less defined,” says Scibelli. “Then use a brow gel to brush out the brow and diffuse any harsh lines.”

Step Two: Brushing Up

Step Two: Brushing Up

For this brow shape, Neil claims the number-one trick is to always brush the hairs upward first after applying product. If you start by brushing a brow outward instead of upward, the strands will start to clump together with the gel product. Immediately after applying brow gel so that brows are still wet and malleable, grab a spoolie. Us it to brush your brows up and then out to create the straight-across effect.

The Full Brow

The Full Brow

Who This Works For: A full brow creates balance between the forehead, cheekbones, and chin, making it a great option for those with larger features or asymmetry in the face.
What You’ll Need:

  • brow pencil
  • pomade
  • brow gel
  • Optional: brow fibers or brow powder
Step One: Filling In

Step One: Filling In

Create a thicker brow appearance by first filling them in with a pomade like the Anastasia Beverly Hills Dipbrow Pomade ($18). “Then, use an eyeliner pointer brush, starting at the base of the brow, to outline the shape by brushing product throughout the brow and in an upward direction,” explains Neil. Continue filling in through the base and mid-length of the brow until you reach the desired thickness.

Want even more of a statement brow? You can also use a thickening product with brow fibers like the Benefit Cosmetics Gimme Brow Volumizing Eyebrow Gel ($24) to lengthen the individual hairs for a fuller effect.

Step Two: Disperse the Product

Step Two: Disperse the Product

Unless you want your brows to look ultradark (and semi-fake), this step is vital. “Use a spoolie to disperse and brush out the products throughout the brows,” says Neil. “You need a spoolie because you have to go heavy on the product to build thickness during the first step, so this will actually help spread the product throughout the brows for a more natural look.”
