How to Wear Bright Makeup For Spring 2012

3 Easy Ways to Master Bright Makeup

From Jason Wu to Marni, the Spring 2012 shows were profuse with bold, vibrant shades. As a result, "It's hard not not to see bright makeup" available on the market right now, says Clarins celebrity beauty artist Pati Dubroff. And while straight-from-the-catwalk cosmetics might be best left on the runway, there are a few ways you can make vivid tones quite wearable.

  1. Harmonize with your clothing: Wearing a notice-me hue "doesn't have to be full-on brass band," explains Dubroff. Instead, choose an element of your outfit to enhance your overall ensemble. For something like this Forever 21 belted tunic (pictured right), Dubroff recommends pairing it with an electric blue liner to add a punch of color.
  2. Let it gel with your jewelry: At Marni, some models (like the one pictured above) donned Creamsicle-orange eye makeup that perfectly matched with their statement earrings. Dubroff also employs this trick for celebrities on the red carpet. "Otherwise, it might be too overt," she says.
  3. Take baby steps: To add color into the mix without taking it too far, Dubroff advises making baby steps. To do this, think sheer washes of bright color, in lieu of something more opaque.
