How to Wear a Lob Haircut

3 Tips For Achieving the Perfect Lob

We're happy to present this story from our friends at Allure:

If you're over long hair but too young for a bob, there's a happy medium. Literally. It's called the lob (short for "long bob"), and actresses in their 20s and early 30s are jumping on board: Emily Blunt, Emma Roberts, Nicole Richie, and January Jones have all gone for shoulder-grazing cuts. The good news: styling them is easy, since lobs look awesome straight and sleek (like Blunt's) or wavy and beachy (like Roberts's). And they're that rare cut that really does look good on everyone. "If you have a round face, it's not going to make you look too round, because the length is below the jaw," says hairstylist Chris McMillan. "And if you have a long face, the textured layers are going to add a really nice width." So take pictures of your favorite lob to your hairstylist. And these tips from hairstylist Chris McMillan couldn't hurt:

1. If you only ask your stylist for one thing, ask them to cut your hair shorter and straight across in the back, and longer in the front. You'll avoid the number one pitfall of long bobs, which is their tendency to look too soccer mom-ish. You want the front to skim your shoulders.

2. What makes celebs' lobs so cool is the uneven finish at the bottom. But if you have fine hair, piece-y can turn stringy. The thicker your hair, the choppier your stylist should make the ends.

3. Yes, it seems like everyone is getting superblunt bangs lately. And if you have thick hair and look like Rose Byrne, that's great. But for the rest of us, side-swept bangs are much more flattering. Really long ones that fall below the eyebrows are the best, because you can tuck them behind your ear. They also won't look awkward at any point between cuts.
