We're happy to present this story from our friends at Allure:
"It's all about not blinking," Jamie Chung said of her deft skills with individual lashes. The Real World reality star turned actress (that happens sometimes!), who stars in Premium Rush and Man with the Iron Fists with Rza and Russell Crowe this fall, has a bit of an eyelash obsession. When she filmed Fists in Shanghai, she left with boxes of falsies. Eyelashes are the first thing she notices about people: "Boys always have the most luscious eyelashes," she complained. Check out all of Jamie's beauty secrets when you keep reading.
So, the false lashes you got down; what beauty skill haven't you mastered?
"Lip liner. I'm terrible. I don't know how makeup artists have such a steady hand. Eyelashes, if you mess up a little it still looks okay, but with lip liner you're done."
Your parents were strict: When were you first allowed to wear makeup?
"I had really bad skin growing up; I had eczema. And I would use a lot of makeup to cover up the dry patches and any pimples and whatnot. I had to learn how to apply makeup, and they were okay with it. But my mom is so gorgeous without makeup and she never really encouraged it. She just really encouraged me to stay out of the sun. You know, growing up in California I just loved soaking in the sun. I was like a California girl; I loved being tanned and dark. And I would buy this product called Sun Kissed Hair that would turn your hair blonde—yeah, yeah."
Ah, so you did the teenage "laying out"?
"Oh my god, non-stop. Whenever I had a chance."
And now? Are you using sunscreen or products with SPF?
"There are two that I use. One is Shisiedo White Lucent Brightening Protective Emulsion, but it's only SPF 15. The other is Specific Beauty Daily Hydrating Lotion SPF 30, and it's very light, not oily. I think I read about it in your magazine. I love Specific Beauty's Professional Moisture Complex too, I wear it at night, it smells like lovely lavender."
What beauty product are you always packing in your purse?
"Always a lipstick. I'm at my boyfriend's quite often and I don't have a lot of makeup there, but I do always have lipstick in my purse, so I can cheat and use it as a blush too. Just dab a little color on my cheeks and lips and immediately I look refreshed. Right now, I've got this awesome Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet number 32 in my bag. It's a beautiful coral and it kind of matches the jeans I'm wearing."
Is there a beauty product that you have a million different brands of, that you're constantly switching up?
"Again, lipstick. I have M.A.C, Chanel, Bobbi Brown, I mean the list goes on. I'm always trying new liquid eyeliners and eyeliners in pots too. There's one drugstore pot that I love and it's only like, $7. Let me find it. [Finding sounds]. Oh man, and I finally organized my makeup drawer."
Wait, you have a whole drawer of makeup?
"Oh you don't even want to know. You'd be appalled. I mean, I'm constantly trying to give things away. Ah, [the pot is] L'Oréal HIP High Intensity Pigment Color Truth Cream Eyeliner and it is amazing; it stays on and it doesn't bleed."
Is there any beauty product that you're loyal to?
"I stay pretty true to the M.A.C Studio Sculpt foundation. When people put makeup on me on set, they usually use different brands, but for me, I really like a light base makeup. And I never change my mascara. That's the number one thing. I use CoverGirl Lash Exact waterproof."
Why can't it be beat?
"I have really small, short eyelashes that don't really curl and the way this brush applies is just perfect. And another thing I never stray from is Almay Eye Makeup Remover Pads; they're the best. I use the moisturizing ones. When they're on sale, I go to Ulta and buy in bulk."
Is there any beauty trend from the past that you regret trying?
"Oh yeah. I mean, I would send you a picture but that would be mortifying. In middle school, I wore brown lip liner. Just brown lip liner."
Wait, is this the source of your lip liner problem, flashbacks?
"I think if I talk to my therapist, she would make that connection."
