Jane Krakowski Talks About Safe Tanning

Jane Krakowski Wants You to Tan the Healthy Way

You know how I'm always preaching about the importance of wearing a sunscreen, and by now, I'm sure you know that tanning beds are bad news. But if you are looking for the benefits of a glowing tan without the life-threatening side effects, you've got options. Jergens and The Skin Cancer Foundation have paired up with Jane Krakowski to put out an important — and might I add, rather humorous — video message. Each time this awareness-raising spot is viewed from now until Aug. 31, Jergens will make a $1 donation (up to $20,000) to the foundation. Jane has lots to say about her latest endeavor, so to find out more, just keep reading.

How did you get involved with Jergens?
Jergens approached me and wanted to do a video. Every time the video was played, they would donate $1 to The Skin Cancer Foundation, while the video would also be a friendly, hopefully humorous reminder of skincare health for women. I thought that that was just a great idea with Summer approaching. I've been using the Natural Glow Revitalizing Moisturizer ($8.50), and I just think it's such a great alternative way to get that little bit of color that we all are looking for, and in a safe manner. Hopefully people will click on the video and watch as many times as they can bear!

Why is this cause so important to you?
I'm amazed by some of the numbers actually that I've been learning about — the numbers of people that are still using tanning beds and the numbers of people that are still not protecting themselves in the natural sun. I've learned so much from the awareness that has been out there, and that's changed my patterns. . . There are so many other alternatives than using the natural sun these days and we know so much more now and we can be wiser, so hopefully I can help spread the word and raise some money as well.

Have you ever had a really bad sunburn?
Oh yes, when I was a teenager. We didn't know very much then and we did all the things you're not supposed to do, like using baby oil with silver blankets — hopefully not at the same time — and just being out in the sun with very low SPF numbers on, if anything. As I've learned more about skincare health, I don't do any sort of that stuff now. Back in the day I've had many an eclectic sunburn where you've laid out too long on one side or end up with a piece that you missed with sunscreen. Suddenly you have a strange bikini string mark. I've had them all.

Anything people are really surprised to learn about you?
Well, I drive a Vespa around New York. That's my favorite way to get around the city, on my Vespa.
