Do You Think Brazilian Waxes Are Truly Popular?

Funny lady Janeane Garofalo has a new stand-up special out called If You Will, and in it she takes on the popularity of Brazilian waxes. In a recent interview, she said, "We've been conned into thinking it's desirable to have that waxing done and that people like it. I think it's a national myth that we have all gone along with for some reason."

But how many people are getting Brazilians, anyway? It's not like there's a hair census that reveals the trends of the nether regions. When it comes to depilation, I'm definitely a "to each her own" kind of girl. While some people wax or shave everything, plenty of others don't. So what do you think? Is Brazilian waxing really as popular as Janeane says?

Hello everyone. I would just like to say that I am a man. I love pubic hair on woman. I wish you all would stop shaving and waxing. Adults are suppose to have hair down there. It is sexy and natural. As for the smell, I love the smell of woman. They have Pheromones that are a turn on to men. Or at least they are to me. I just think that you all should stop thinking to much about what others think and just relax and let it grow. I will thank you for it and I know many men that would as well.

waxing the bikini area and Brazilian are personal choices. However, while trimming and a landing strip might help in maintaining the hygiene, shaving or waxing it all off, might do the contrary, ask any gynecologist and they tell you that makes your vagina more prone to infections and contact allergies due to rubbing on underwear, mucus (not skin, it's mucus you are exposing) exposed to laundry detergent residue always present on the underwear or clothes you wear. "To me it feels cleaner and more hygienic." - that's a feeling, it's not actually cleaner, as someone said, water and soap will do. Vagina does not "like" soap, not even the vaginal hygiene one. Use just water, chamomile tea if you feel you need something extra in your routine. "It also increases sensitivity." - again ask any gynecologist, at first might be so, because it's new. Later on, all the rubbing against clothes will do exactly the opposite, it will Desensitise you. Think of the case or circumcision or not. In the U.S: this is done regularly on boy babies, no consulting the parents. The pretext is, it's cleaner. again, the cleanliness depends on how often do you wash, not on this extra piece of skin. Skin is there for a purpose, just like hair over pubic area, to protect the area from minor cuts, to catch the particles of dirt, dust, whatever and to prevent it from getting inside, before you had a chance to remove it by washing. Plus, it's proven by research that an exposed glans due to circumcision might get less sensitive than the one with skin still on. The practice reg. pubic area differ in U.S. and Europe or any other country, but NONE, and I stress NONE lead to more cleanliness. Only washing will do this. So, the point is it's a personal choice entirely, No need to argument it by cleaner, more hygienic or even more sensitive and thus sexually pleasing. It's all in your head. Do what you like, but be aware of all pros and cons. Do not judge people and unclean because they prefer not to...

Wow! So much hatred on this post! I personally shave just because it's cheaper and doesn't hurt. I personally don't like the look of hair, but to each their own. I defiantly don't feel like I'm 12 when I do shave btw. I also don't think a lack of hair means they are any less of a woman than if they did have hair. I only know a small handful of people who have gotten waxes but I don't think they go often. Also I think it would be awkward to get a wax because I wouldn't want someone poking around down there! lol. But like I said, to each their own.

@ kohina. Do your research before making sweeping judgments. One cannot define a person by their pubic hairstyle--whether it exists or not. As a girl who watches a wide variety of porn, I can say that hair is MUCH more common now (at least within the industry) than it was in the nineties and early 2000s. Not every porn star is or was Jenna Jameson. (In fact, there is no shortage of popular brunettes with small-to-medium breasts and no plastic surgery. In addition, at least five big-name directors with big companies will only shoot "natural" girls.)Another thing: the "bald look" is much more prevalent in heterosexual male performers than in female performers.

hmm... it such a personal choice no one choice is right or wrong..brazilians are$$$ thu...I just started doing my brazilian @ home..went out bought all my tools including the melting pot. My brazilian turned out well but that may be due in part to the fact that I have bn getting it done prof for over 4 years...the hair is fine so its easy to do....and last but not least I got a bottle of TEND..works like magic.

This confirms many of us have different views. What ever we do, we should do it for ourselves and what makes us feel good about ourselves.. The only thing I should like to add is that I have a lesbian friend who is completely smooth, she ceratinly is not doing it for the benefit of any man!

I had one boyfriend specifically ask me never to shave because it creeped him out. You'd be surprised how many guys don't want their chicks to be totally bare.

I would even go as far to say that all of these modern beauty regimens that women go through are a way to still keep women subservient in a society where women are no longer second class citizens. That's just my opinion though.

Women seem to get criticized for everything they do, and we are often each other's biggest critics. Do we really need more judgments? " While I do agree that women should stop judging each other I still believe that women who shave are giving in to a porno trend started in the early 90s and aren't that strong and are giving in to what men want. Believe me I wouldn't shave anything on my body if I could get away with it but we live in a society where women are supposed to be almost super feminine and little girl like. It's like as soon as women's lib started all of these beauty standards got introduced to make us as un-masculine as possible. It's like we have all of this power in the workforce but NOW we have to spend a ridiculous amount of time grooming ourselves, while men still earn more and don't have to groom anything. I just can't respect women who feel the need to cave in to trends like this. I'd really like to but I can't.

Currently I just trim, but no guy has ever complained. My reasons for wanting ti completely bare are totally personal. Venus1, I like the point you raise about men shaving their face. (And for what it's worth, I don't are for body hair on men either.)

different guys prefer different things.. i do live in europe, and contrary to common stereotypes, we do wax regularly :) i know that most of my friends go brazilian, either waxing or shaving it themselves.. i used to shave it all off, but started getting brazilians in the past couple of months just because my hair is so dark and coarse and you can always see the "shadow" of the hairs..i have talked to my boyfriend about it, and it seems that guys really like natural (hairy down there!) women. he begged me to leave a "landing strip" ;)

I agree with Venus1. It isn't the "one thing" that will make a woman look pre-pubescent. Saying this kind of thing is just hurtful to other women who prefer to have less/no hair, making us seem like some guy is controlling our beauty habits. The pre-pubescent argument doesn't affect guys opinions on below the belt grooming, which I assume is the population some ladies target for expressing their preferences. Also, I think our hips, breasts, speech, make-up, hair, clothing, shoes, tattoos, etc. kind of give away the fact that we have completed puberty/are not under 16.
