The key to looking cool on the red carpet is not trying too hard. And Katie Holmes has been taking this notion to the next level by working the step and repeat rocking the same kind of textured bun you might twist up after a sweaty gym session or when running weekend errands. This really is the prime example of making street style look elegant. Since normcore is still en vogue, we got the scoop from celebrity hairstylist Sebastian Scolarici on how he created her latest decidedly messy topknot for the premiere of The Giver. Read on, because, kids, you can totally try this at home.

Step 1: On damp hair, spray a small amount of the Alterna Bamboo Style Boho Waves Tousled Texture Mist ($22), tousling hair from the ears down to the ends. Bow-dry hair smooth but still leave some of your natural texture.

Step 2: Take Alterna Haircare Bamboo Volume 2-in-1 Volumizer ($25), and emulsify the styling product into a paste by rubbing it quickly in between your hands for a few seconds. Then add it to your hair to give it volume.

Step 3: Sweep hair into a high ponytail, securing it tightly with a hair tie.

Step 4: Separate hair into two sections and tease each section with a hint of Alterna Haircare Caviar Perfect Texture Finishing Spray ($28).

Step 5: Carefully twist the two sections together, wrapping hair tightly around the base of the ponytail and securing it with hairpins.

Step 6: Finish with the Alterna Haircare Caviar Anti-Aging Working Hairspray ($28) to set the look.
