Last year, I chatted with NYC dermatologist Dr. Doris J. Day to discover her tips on preventing acne treatments from staining your bedding. Nobody likes unintentionally tie-dyed sheets and towels, after all. Proactiv, I love you, but please. Much to my surprise, Dr. Day was a guest speaker at the Botox Cosmetic: Express Success Campaign that I attended recently.
And yes, while Dr. Day bounced off the facts and myths about the wrinkle-reducing drug during her presentation, she also provided tips on skin care that struck a chord with me. "Your skin reflects your overall inner health," she said. While her statement might seem obvious, even I, lover of all things skin care, need to be reminded of this every now and then. Check out her five tips for better skin and a healthier outlook by reading more.
- Know your skin: Noticing your skin isn't where it should be? Dr. Day recommends exfoliating a few times a week, getting plenty of vitamin D, and using vitamin A — with retinol treatments being her favorite.
- When time is limited, have a simple skincare regimen: If you've had a late night or are just plain tired, Dr. Day says you should make at least some effort to cleanse the skin. Try Wet Ones ($3.50) or basic cleansing cloths.
- Avoid damaging behavior: Smoking and no SPF? It's not just limited to that. Dr. Day also advocates creating a healthy environment for yourself by using your time to be involved with hobbies and/or volunteering.
- Incorporate quick and easy exercise in your schedule: Manage your stress through a healthy diet and active lifestyle.

This advice is simplistic and disappointing. Obviously washing the skin before bedtime, no matter how late, is suggested. Why I would need to buy Wet Ones to do so makes no sense at all. What's wrong with a facecloth and water? Avoiding stress and exercise with a healthy diet is for overall beauty and health, not just the skin. Why not give us some REAL tips and not something that anyone with common sense would already know?
1can i just say, i love that her name is doris day! hehe.
2I think that these are useful tips. A lot of women don't understand that skin isn't just about what creams and face wash you use. I know that I break out when I am stressed or upset. One of my best skin tips is to make sure that you wash your pillowcase on a frequent basis. This makes a HUGE difference for me when it comes to clear skin!
3Using retinols is THE BEST TIP that anyone can get. period. Not enough people use them and EVERYBODY should. I am 42 and have been using retin a for 5 years now-I am not kidding when I say that I have no wrinkles whatsoever. I am guessed as early 30's and met by shock when I reveal my actual age. I absolutely attribute this to retin a and religious sunscreen use.
4Yup. These rules are simple and may seem obvious but they are the most effective.
5Couldn't agree more with retinoid comment. Regular use improves your skin texture, keeps acne under control, and just improves the overall appearance of your skin. After you get over the initial redness and irritation, it's an awesome product to use. Get the proper stuff though - not the pretend over the counter shizz.
