Kelis went a little Gaga (as in Lady) last night at the Data Awards, with gold conical spikes, gilt false lower eyelashes, sparkling silver shadow on the lids, and some major facial chains. This outfit might be more in the realm of performance art than red carpet getup, but do you think she went all futuristic the right way, or was this a big mistake?

5I read that Lady GaGa (who's look is always avant-garde) has an inspiration for each of her costumes. I do think of her clothes as costumes.
Kelis looks like a hot mess in this get up. No point of inspiration, it's more of a halloween costume gone awry. Just my opinion

8This is typical Kelis style if you ask me. So this isn't a stretch for her. I don't care it but then again I am pretty straight-laced and don't crave the spotlight.

second, kelis has always had an avant-garde kind of style, but here she looks like an attention-seeking fashion victim. she could do better.
14I saw the complete picture on another blog. The outfit is very unsettling. As for avant-garde I would only loosely use that term for Lady GaGa or Kelis. Both in my opinion are attention seekers at best. For true avant-garde, true artistry---Laurie
15Anderson and Grace Jones come to mind. Besides the point anyway, the shoes she is wearing with this outfit look to be from the Spring 2010 A. McQueen collection. I can't even hazard a guess where the latex suit came from (ack).
I "hate this so much right now!"... as Kelis herself, might say.
