This Wig's Name Is So Not Cool

Another Halloween, another costume accessory to make us groan. This time, it's the "ghetto fab" wig — their name, not ours — stocked at stores like Kohl's. Wearing a curly Afro wig on Halloween, as Afrobella points out, can be an iffy endeavor in itself. But labeling this natural hairstyle "ghetto fab" is offensive to many people, and I'm hoping this is the last Halloween to display this kind of insensitivity. (Unlikely, but a girl can dream.)

I wouldn't be offended by a white trash costume or wig. I'm not sure this is any different.

The namer of the wig must be as old as I am or older (45-60) and have been referencing the early '70's blackcentric/Foxxy Brown vibe. A little bit disco a little bit blaxploitation. Nothing racist here. Just "Across 110th Street".

Okay, I'm not trying to be controversial, but I don't feel like this is that big of a deal. I'm not a black woman but I have many fabulous friends who are black and I ENVY them their hair. I keep hoping someday a stylist will be able to give me this. Annnyway, I feel like it's best ot not get riled up over a wig name. Someone mentioned naming a icy blonde wig White Trash or something, and frankly, I've seen that. And it's not offensive. Because it fits a funny stereotype; not all blonde people are White Trash and vice versa. Point of the wig was to make it easy to complete a funny, don't-take-me-seriously-stereotype. You could also use it to be a Russian model. Same here-- you can use it to be Foxxy Cleopatra or some Ghetto chick or a badass FBI agent, the possibilities are endless. Who gives a crap what the wig maker company called it? White Trash, ghetto...whatever, it's not reflected in the hair. let it go, because now this fabulous hair is now gone from retailers because people got their panties in a bunch over it. I doubt the wigmakers' objective here was to perpetuate racism, so let's give it up and not make it an issue, folks. Love!

who thought that one up? they could have even just left it nameless... anything that is a natural look of hair should not be pinned to a socio-economic stereotype. i'm pretty sure no one could be that clueless... must be racist

I encourage everyon who feels strongly enough to go over to Amazon to leave a review. Slowly, as of now, people are leaving comments on the site as to why they find it offensive. Enough bad reviews and media press and they too will snatch it from their site as Kohls did.

Anon 6, maybe there's nothing wrong with being "ghetto fab" if you choose to identify yourself that way, but assuming that natural hair is "ghetto" is insulting. I think it is, anyway.

I am confused as to why this style of wig is referred to as ghetto 1st of all...?? Also very offended by the title - I question any stores that are carrying this wig. Kohls and other stores who once had respect from me get none now.

I wish my natural hair looked like that all the time! I have pin-straight dark hair and I LOVE this look! Ghetto fab? I don't think so!

Yeah it's pretty awful that a natural hair look would be labeled "ghetto fab". It's just a natural look that lots of women look good in. Nobody would think to call a normal looking blonde wig "white trash fab". At least Kohl's stopped selling it after all the hoopla. The costume company needs to follow suit and take it off the shelves or at the very least rename it.
