As promised, the other night I made my own eyeliner from a recipe given to me by reader Little Pepper. It sounded pretty simple; just burn an almond and use the soot to make eyeliner. Turns out, things require a bit more prep than that, but the results were lovely: a highly pigmented carbon black that was very smooth and not at all irritating. I modified the recipe a little bit and created this light winged look with it, which I found basically indistinguishable from something created with a regular black liner. For a cosmetic that costs basically nothing and took me 10 minutes to make, I'm pretty impressed. To see how to do it at home, just click through the tutorial gallery below.

I was wondering, are you using any sort of sunscreen? Can you make your own?
7This looks fantastic, and you can literally get a "smokey" look (or sooty?) Anyhow, it just occured to me that you could use beetroot as a lipstain or blush, that stuff does.not.shift (much to my irritation as I like to eat it raw)

Mostly, it was just trying it a few times and seeing what actually worked. But I don't think
I spent more than 20 minutes on the entire experiment, and when I got it right, it only took me about five!
Cordata, I just put on plain zinc oxide. It's got broad spectrum UV protection up to spf 45, doesn't bother most skin types, and is so, so cheap if you get it without any additives. Doesn't do anything but protect your skin, but it does that well, and it's very natural. As for making your own, there are recipes on the internet, but most of them suggest adding titanium dioxide and oils to a zinc oxide base, and I figure why mess with a good thing?
Ticamorena, if I hadn't added the olive oil, the consistency would have been exactly that of an eye shadow or loose liner, so I'd definitely say you could do a smoky eye. I just added the olive oil to see if it would work, and it did! So really, you can get multiple uses out of this recipe: a charcoal shadow, a dry liner, or, with a drop of oil, something with a more fluid consistency.
9That is just a hot mess to me. Maybe it would look better dry.

14Hi Bella, I just came across this AMAZING line of make up that is made from all fruit and vegetables NOTHING ELSE! I just got the tinted moisturizer(LOVE IT) and so I order the concealer and powder foundation too and I cannot wait!
