Seen at Milly: How to Use Forceps to Fancify Your Ponytail

Feb 13 2013 - 1:46pm

For Fall 2013, Milly by Michelle Smith decided upon a beauty look that Sporty Spice would adore. MAC conjured up a makeup look that was centered on one product: lip gloss. And the hair was pulled back in a casual style that only takes six minutes to re-create.

The look: Dewy makeup, casual ponytails, and dark gray nails.
The inspiration: Pretty punk with a sporty lilt.
Key products: MAC Clear Lipglass and forceps (yes, the medical kind).

Kevin Ryan for Rsession Tools created a low and casual ponytail with a polished finish. The look started with a rough middle part, and then hair was pulled back into a low ponytail.

Ryan then wrapped a piece of hair around the elastic using medical forceps to tuck in the ends. Finally, the look was completed with a dusting of Aveda Pure Abundance powder. "It gives a dry texture, so when you have fine hair, it thickens it up and dirties the hair," he said. "When you wear messy hair, doing a little bit of a finish shows it was intentional."

"It's pretty grunge," lead makeup artist Romy Soleimani said. "The collection had futuristic and sporty elements. We used the gloss on the cheeks and on the eyelid, so it's a little bit sweaty but also reflective." Her primary product was MAC Clear Lipglass and a bit of Haute and Naughty mascara. "

Michelle Saunders painted nails with Essie [1] Power Clutch, a dark gray with green undertones. "It's inspired by menswear: a gray tweed suit," she explained. "When you put a neutral gray on the hands, it just lets everything else in the collection shine."

And if you want to find the perfect gray for your needs, follow Saunders's rule: "It's less based on skin tone and more based on season," she said. "As we go into Fall and Winter, you can do dark gray and you can do the green-grays, and in Spring and Summer, you can do a lighter pastel gray, almost like a mint gray."
