Nicole Miller Comes Back From the Future

Sep 8 2012 - 5:43am

Nicole Miller [1]'s Spring 2013 beauty look was a little spacey — and that's a good thing. The designer's collection was inspired by all things futuristic. Once you see this runway look, you'll be looking forward to Spring (and beyond).

The look: A plum smoky eye, galactic nail art, and Avatar braids.
The inspiration: The future and technology.
Who would wear it: The woman who predicts the next big beauty trends (and how to pull them off).

Functional Style

"The future is going to be streamlined," said Aveda lead hairstylist Kevin Ryan. "So the two fishtail braids keep the hair out of the face. It's like a zipper."

Middle Mane

To keep the style sleek and clean, Ryan went with a middle part. The team used Aveda Volumizing Tonic [2] ($10) to achieve an Avatar-style finish.

Black (and Purple) Eye

"It is a bit of a rock 'n' roll smoky eye, but not too out of control," explained MAC key makeup artist James Kaliardos. "It's technology — but in a natural way."

Tied Together

The team used a new Spoiled Rich eye palette (available Spring 2013) to mix various shades of purple. Kaliardos applied the same blush on eyelids and cheeks to bring continuity to the makeup look.

Spaceship View

To create the space-age design, the nails were speckled with a custom-mixed mint shade, pink, and glitter in CND Sapphire Sparkle Effect. Then, the nail artists created "stars" using Studio White. The final touch: creating a diamond frame with Blackjack.

Black Is Back

"We originally tried the design in white, but black is becoming a year-round color, and it makes the other colors pop," CND ambassador Candice Manacchio said.
