Then and Now: "The Big Six" Models

Before the Coco Rochas and the Agyness Deyns of the modeling world, there were "The Big Six," a crop of supermodels who dominated all things hair, fashion, and makeup in the late 1980s and early 1990s. These days, actresses and pop stars often fill the positions left behind by these powerhouse models. So, let's take a trip down memory lane to see how much these six ladies have — and haven't — changed.

Claudia Schiffer was my favorite supermodel. I always loved Kate Moss too, man she was pretty when she started out!

In those days Chisty was my fav. Those girls were sups during the heydays of modelings when models were on covers of fashion mags. They only had to compete with other models for the jobs. For almost a decade models have had to compete with big time celebs for fashion mag covers and ad campaigns. You're lucky if you see one cover a year with a model on it. It has not been a great decade for models, which I give great credit to the ones who've made it.

all this slideshow needed was a couple of stills from George Michael's diva filled vids of the 90s and it would be perfect!

I also liked Helena Christensen, Iman (she wasn't exactly from the 90's, but she still was a supermodel), Laetitia Casta, Karen Mulder... there were many!

My favorite model is Kate. So versatile.However, I think she would have aged better if smoked and drank less. Those habits took away from her natural good looks and freshness. JMHO.

Oh, Faylinn I like her too. Love these ladies and would love to have a big photo spread of all the 'super models' I remember a spread a few(?) years ago somewhere with all the big names on the cover which was quite fun. :ponder:

All of them have found ways of making themselves more 'beautiful' - ie conventionally beautiful, they're much neater, and for instance Claudia Schiffer's eyes are much bigger looking, Cindy Crawford's make up is bang up to date and gorgeously understated. But they look so much cuter in the before pictures. NOT because they are younger - they're fantastic, incredible looking women now - but because a little imperfection and unconsciousness is necessary for sexiness. They're too good at what they do now. The possible exception, Naomi Campbell, whose face is imperceptibly older but many times more womanly, and she may be the most extraordinarily genetically fortunate individual who ever lived. What an amazing face and body she has.

The thing is the "then" big six are still big people who didn't "grow up" with them still know who they are and know they paved the way. By the way these ladies still get MAJOR work!
