Where should you start? "Tinted moisturizer and BB creams are great at keeping your skin looking supple, but if you need extra coverage, use a moisturizing foundation and set it with a loose translucent powder — it's a silky look that will reflect light. Just steer clear of matte products."

Contouring keeps this look lively and not one-dimensional. Are matte powders blacklisted here, too? "Look for products with words like 'luminous' and 'glow'. A cream bronzer will give you extra contour, and a powder will add an allover glow as well as set the layers of makeup. Blend a liquid bronzer in downward strokes along the hollows of your cheeks and the sides of your nose. Sweep a bronzing powder along the same areas to diffuse the lines, and finish off with a soft powder blush on the apples of your cheeks. A shimmery coral or rose will add just enough warmth without veering into too-pink clown territory."

What about eye-shadow shades? "Stick to hues in the same family as your skin tone — apply a soft nude to the entire lid and enhance the crease with a medium brown. Make sure to highlight the inner corners of your eye and under your brow. If you're craving more definition, use a brown liner on the lash line and brighten your waterline with a nude pencil. The key is to complement the colors already on your face."

Is a bright lip color overpowering? "Stick with a creamy nude-pink lipstick, but for a brighter pop of color, match a sheer gloss to your blush."
