The One AM Radio's Fontaine Cole on Hair, Touring, and Beauty

Go See a Band, Get Good Hair Advice

If you live in North America (and I know that most of you do), you kinda owe it to yourself to check out the One AM Radio during its tour this month. Frontman Hrishikesh Hirway's quiet electronic pop takes on a fuller sound when performed with bandmates Fontaine Cole and Scott Leahy. And as it turns out, Fontaine is not only a multi-instrumentalist, she's also a hairstylist who manages to stay cute while handling a busy tour schedule. "Playing a show immediately after a 10-hour car ride can be rough," she admits. "I usually take a few minutes before a show to refresh with dry shampoo, brush a little powder on my face and a little bit of blush," she says. Another easy on-the-road tip: she removes makeup with Vaseline on a cotton ball.

So does this stylist-musician have advice for women who want to follow in her footsteps? "If I had to give some advice for anyone who wants to start or join a band, I'd say that it's important to just say yes," she says, adding that for years she was too nervous to share her own music. "Be true to yourself, have faith in yourself and what you have to share with the world, and say yes to as much as you can." If you do catch the One AM Radio on tour, don't be afraid to ask Fontaine about her skills on the accordion or with a pair of shears. She's prepared for anything: "I bring my tools on tour to do touch-ups for my bandmates — or anyone that wants a cut."
