It's easy to link the name Taylor Swift with thoughts of feminine whimsy, and her latest video proves why. The 30-second spot for her new fragrance, Taylor by Taylor Swift, transports you into a kind of ethereal Summer seen through vintage filters. Taylor swings on swings, plays with sparklers, and spritzes her fragrance before leaping into a car with her girlfriends. The video is the first of a series for the fragrance, which is available now at Macy's and Ulta for $50. And with notes of sparkling tangerine, magnolia petals, peonies, and cashmere musk, this could be your new Summer-perfect scent.
Finding your signature scent can be like finding the perfect mate. And if you hit it right, your signature scent can be a part of your life forever. Renee Bukowski, senior development manager at Tru Fragrance, notes that picking your perfume complement can be a daunting task. "It's something a woman will wear on a daily basis and maybe even for the rest of her life," she says. But her tips for finding your ideal scent will help you navigate the department-store counter with ease.
Keep your personality in mind:
"You want the fragrance you choose to perfectly capture your essence and smell amazing to everyone around you," Bukowski says. "Your persona, including your style, fashion profile, and things you like to do, can help determine what scent best fits your personality." So if you're looking for a feminine fragrance and are a romantic at heart, then reach for something with floral notes. Anything frilly make your stomach turn? Look for something with notes that skew cleaner.
Get it on:
Sniffing from the bottle or a perfume tester strip won't suffice, nor will merely admiring it on another person. "In searching for that signature scent, be sure to smell it on your own skin, as it could smell differently on you than someone else," Bukowski notes.

When most fashion designers develop their beauty portfolio, they stay focused on the women's market, but Tom Ford is not your average designer. He is expanding his already successful beauty business into a luxury skin care brand for men. "This is not Jean Paul Gaultier with men's makeup," John Demsey, group president of the Estée Lauder Cos., told WWD. "This is a serious, high-ticket men's grooming line with a couple of products with cosmetics benefits to be used in a very masculine way."
Ford is well on his way to building an iconic empire the likes of Dior, Chanel, and Yves Saint Laurent. A successful fashion résumé including your own clothing line? Check. A coveted fragrance and cosmetics business? Of course. But by focusing his skin care project on men, Ford is proving he has an innovative vision.
Studies have shown that male interest in makeup is steadily growing. However, Ford admits that he already wears bronzer and concealer regularly. "People think I am always tan, but I wear bronzer every single day. I use it on areas of my face that would usually get hit by the sun after a morning playing tennis," he said. This is one man who is knowledgeable about makeup and skin care, too. "Most people say to me, 'Wow, you have great skin.' I use skin care and grooming products," said Ford. "Get a magnifying mirror and look at your face. Do you have broken capillaries? Pale or sallow skin? Dry skin?"
A man who knows about capillaries? Ford has done his research. Scheduled to launch in the US this November, Tom Ford For Men has eight products: a cleanser, mud mask, moisturizer, eye treatment, night treatment, lip balm, bronzing gel, and concealer. Prices range from $25 to $150. This Fall, Ford is also expanding his Private Blend fragrance offerings with two additions to the unisex oud line, Oud Fleur and Tobacco Oud.
Since lifestyle brand Joie launched in 2001, it has brought a casual-chic aesthetic to everything from clothes and footwear to handbags and jewelry, and now the brand is expanding its offerings to the fragrance arena, too. Folle de Joie combines the bohemian vibe of a California girl with a timeless vintage aesthetic. The perfume starts with a hint of citrus, which then dries down to floral notes of jasmine and rose. Finally, the finish is filled with woodsy and leather aromas. The scent complements the comfortable and feminine style of the Joie brand and also comes in a hand cream. You can buy them online, at Joie boutiques, and select specialty stores. The scent retails for $98 and the hand cream for $38.
The world of designer fragrance is once again expanding with the announcement that Alexander McQueen will release a men's and women's fragrance, developed by Procter & Gamble. "We believe it's probably the most prominent brand that is not yet playing in the luxury beauty market," P&G Prestige vice president Luigi Feola told WWD. "Alexander McQueen brings a unique perspective to the P&G Prestige portfolio. It is a tremendous privilege to partner with Alexander McQueen and to bring this incredible brand to beauty." The project is currently in development.
While this is the first fragrance deal for Alexander McQueen as a brand, the label's late founder, Lee Alexander McQueen, had already taken the first steps into the perfume world. He released Kingdom through YSL Beauté in 2003, as well as the My Queen scent in 2005. When YSL Beauté was taken over by L'Oréal, however, McQueen's fragrances didn't make the cut and have since been discontinued, leaving a hole in the fragrance market that only this iconic brand can fill.
McQueen passed away in 2010, and Sarah Burton took over as creative director. She is expected to "play a significant role" in the fragrance development, according to Feola. "Creating a fragrance feels like a natural progression as it enhances the world of Alexander McQueen," Burton said in a statement. "I am confident that this will be an exciting and successful collaboration." No release date has been set.

The fragrance industry sees so many new launches every season with plenty of bottles being discontinued, so celebrating the 10th anniversary of Narciso Rodriguez For Her ($25-$104) is a big deal. As a longtime fan of this soft, sensual scent, it's easy to forget just how much this was a pioneering fragrance back in 2003. From it's black opaque bottle to the key note of musk, by description it sounds like men's cologne, but the designer himself was keen on pushing forward with all of his unconventional ideas for his first-ever women's perfume. His original vision paid off, and it has garnered quite the cult following. The blend of musks mixed with floral notes like orange blossom, osmanthus, and rose make this a warm, feminine scent that is sure to stand the test of time.
Robert Pattinson has been confirmed as the new face of Dior's fragrance for men, Dior Homme, and the fragrance brand has released a first look at his campaign image. But the Twilight heartthrob isn't the first celebrity to lend his face to Christian Dior. Robert joins a celebrated list of names, including Jude Law, Alain Delon, Natalie Portman, and Charlize Theron.
Campaigns have already reportedly been shot by photographer Nan Goldin and director Romain Gavras, but no release date has been confirmed yet. Unfortunately for those of us in the States, the television campaign will run exclusively in Europe, with the exception of the UK, and Asia, excluding Japan and China.
Known for concocting fragrant expressions of New York City's many neighborhoods, perfume brand Bond No. 9 is breaking new ground on the digital village with the launch of HTTP://WWW.BONDNO9.COM. The brand's first completely digital fragrance launch, dubbed "HTTP" for short, is the first in its new Digital Collection. Launching June 30 at $250 for 100 ml., HTTP will be sold exclusively online.
HTTP is a unisex fragrance, with notes of apple, bergamot, pineapple, cedarwood, musk, and amber. And unlike other Bond No. 9 bottles that feature delicate pictures akin to the scent's corresponding neighborhood, HTTP's bottle is embossed with a large QR code. After all, the largest neighborhood in the world is the Internet. Want to learn more? Use a QR scanner to scan the code on the bottle to go to the bottle's site. Yes, it's really that cool.
