How I Made My Winter Scalp Issues Come to an End

Feb 4 2014 - 4:30am

While I love my large, over-the-top Afro, lurking underneath all those kinks and coils is a dry, itchy scalp. And right now, the snowy Winter weather in NYC is flaring up unsavory flakes (in addition to making my well-defined curls into a puffy mess). Typically I do a hot oil treatment before every wash, using coconut oil, but now I have found another treatment to add to the pre-'poo rotation [1], Philip Kingsley Stimulating Scalp Mask [2] ($9). This cream had my approval from the very beginning because it cools on contact and smells like Listerine (due to the menthol, camphor, and peppermint). Plus, it comes in a small tube, which is easy to apply at the roots. But beyond that, this soothing scalp tonic has zinc to help reduce excess oil, vitamin E to strengthen strands, and magnesium, which helps stimulate hair growth. After each use, my scalp feels like it's undergone an expensive spa treatment [3]. But to be honest, it was the tingling that got me!
