When it comes to beauty, I'll admit that I can always learn more about having a healthy complexion. So when I heard of a book that Japanese women consider to be their go-to guide to skin care, I took notice. Esthetician Chizu Saeki's The Japanese Skincare Revolution ($14) has recently been translated to English, and it draws upon her 45 years of beauty industry experience.
Focusing on a simple, cost-effective approach, the majority of this short read centers on positive thinking (quit zeroing in on those spots and fine lines) and ideas for tweaking products you already have. The most important tool for beauty? Your hands, says Saeki.
What separates this book from others is her fun ideas: a DIY lotion mask made with cotton pads, a honey lip treatment, a shower cap steam pack (scary looking, but effective), and a water bottle face massage that I'm dying to try. Interactive and engaging, Saeki also includes surveys to help you determine what type of skin you have and tests to determine elasticity, moisture levels, and symmetry of the face (my right side is the "slacker" side). We all know we don't need to spend a fortune to look like a million bucks, and I'm all for Saeki's feel-good message. It's like having an older, sage relative dishing advice. "Take in beauty with all your senses," she says. And now I'm off to practice my facial exercise routine by reciting the five Japanese vowels: ah-ay-ee-oh-oo.

A majority of it centers on positive thinking?? I hope this isn't The Secret for skincare...LOL.
1I'd love to read about some of their little at home tricks.
2Speaking of positive thinking, I always wonder how much stressing about wrinkles and aging just causes someone to age more than they would if they were more relaxed about it.
3Cool book but I think it ultimately comes down to genetics.
4I lived in Japan for two years and many of my girlfriends are Japanese, and you should know that these are NOT home remedies that Japanese women in general use. I've never heard of them before! Perhaps the estheticians of Japan know about them, but most of their skin is due to eating predominately seaweed, veggies, rice and fish all day. When I lived there and ate their diet exclusively, my skin looked luminous, but this didn't change its overall structure. They also use umbrellas when it is sunny and cover their faces a lot with scarves, so most of it is health and very little exposure to sun!
5I live in Japan, and everygirls know her.DIY skin care is famous.
6That is very unique & fun , but I don't use that way....
Very cool. I stealing a glimpse of it on Amazon now.
7I think that the more healthy, and fish-rich, Japanese diet plays a large role in how well Japanese women age, as does the more old-fashioned beauty standard of fair skin that older women benefit from by having not gone out and tanned all the time.
But remember that Japan is also the land of crazy plastic surgery procedures like shaving one's face bones down to achieve a more Western look, and nutty beauty procedures like the IV skincare thing that was covered here a while back
8water bottle face massage?!
Please tell me more about this!
9I definitely want to check this book out! Japanese people are so healthy and never seem to age! I'd love to know some of their secrets!
10just checked it out on amazon, and i'm definitely ordering it. thanks, bella!
11kool
12i love the do it yourself aspect of this because unfortunately i cant always go to the spa for some tlc.
13I just tried her massage method to get rid of toxins around the chin area that accumulate around the lymph nodes. I couldn't believe it! It really works. I felt like my sinuses were draining so much stuff was running down my throat. I am definitely going to order her book now.
14I just recently went back to Sheseido skin care products- what a difference in my skin! they also believe in message- of course I eat healthier now and drink more water-etc!
15i bought the book few weeks back, and i'm excited! have been following the basic skincare steps and techniques religiously. the 3 min lotion mask , serum and sealing off with cream, twice a day, really does wonders to my skin! my skin brightened and suppled up, fine lines are diminishing and i dun even feel the need for much makeup these days.
16light foundation to even up a bit, some mascara and lip stain and i'm good to go!
of course , what we eat is important too, but that is basic isn't it? to eat healthily is not just for beauty, but more importantly for overall health. when we are healthy our skin shows.
good sleep is the other important factor.
