Ten years ago, I went through somewhat of an awkward phase. I decided to dye my hair blond à la Meg Ryan in You've Got Mail, but it was more straw-like than stellar. Also, I had put on a few of the dreaded college pounds (I only thought veggie pizza sounded healthy), and to top it all off, my face was breaking out like crazy. The solution? Some deep conditioner, a smarter diet, and Proactiv Solution.
I used the three-step system for about a year or two, and my pimples seemed to be under control. Flash-forward to a few weeks ago, and the spots were back with a vengeance. I got my hands on some Proactiv, which uses benzoyl peroxide to kill P. acnes, the bacteria that causes acne, and ripped open the packaging with great fervor. But after 10 years, does Proactiv still do the trick? Find out when you read more.
In short, I am amazed. After only a week of use, the texture of my skin is smoother, tighter, and appears less oily. The redness and inflammation has subsided, and bumps have softened — if not disappeared. While I notice a slight medicinal smell after applying, I am willing to look the other way due to the amazing results I've had. Often, many acne treatments contribute to dry, flaky skin, but Proactiv does not. In fact, my makeup goes on more evenly, and as an added bonus, I seem to use less. One word of caution? The products may cause bleaching on fabric, so consider using only white pillowcases and towels.
The Three-Step System ($40) leaves the skin feeling very active and refreshed. It includes Renewing Cleanser, which uses small beads to exfoliate skin; Revitalizing Toner, which takes away excess oil, cleansing deep down; and Repairing Lotion, an oil-free moisturizer that helps heal and prevent blemishes from forming. While all skin types are different, I highly recommend Proactiv for the outstanding results I've had with the products in my younger years, as well as the results I've had as a wiser, back-to-my-natural-roots woman of a decade later.

I really like Proactiv, too ! I use it every other day because it can really dry out my skin, but it really works.
1Proactiv doesn't work for me.
I'm glad you ladies have found something that works, though.
2Proactiv doesn't work for me either.
3Proactiv for life!
4I LOVE it. My skin is so much healthier when I use it. I was very close to going on the crazy government regulated prescription meds, glad Proactiv saved me on that one. You really have to be strict with it, I've noticed that if I miss even one face washing I'll have a small breakout. So it may not work for you if you don't have a set routine.
5It also just may not work with your chemistry; I am religious about washing my face at the same time each morning and evening and Proactiv didn't work for me.
6I swear by it too. I'm so upset that my local grocery store got rid of the Proactiv kiosk they used to have. I miss being able to pick it up at the store whenever I needed it and not pay shipping!
7Proactiv worked incredibly well for me in college, but when I returned to it this year it just did not work at all. I JUST received neutrogena SkinID in the mail, so im really anxious to try that.
8Proactiv didn't work for me, and I followed the instructions exactly on how to use it. It actually made me a million times worse, but I'm glad it works for some people!
9Proactiv worked like a charm for me in my early twenties. I still have some of the clarifying lotion and use it on my bad breakouts.
10Proactiv worked amazing for me until I had to stop using it after I ruined three new sets of linen, some pajama tops and towels
11this NEVER worked for me. I used it for like 6 months, complete crap. Drugstore cleansers, moisturizers, and toners helped more than this over priced product.
12proactiv is the ONLY thing that has ever ever worked for me and i love it!
13The only product that I found benefical to me in the Proactive line is the Refining mask. I love it! I just put a little on a place where a breakout is starting and the next morning it has shrunk and the redness is gone. The rest of the line dried my skin out too much.
14OMG no wonder why my sheets have turned colors! i thought i accidently put bleach in the washer! i have been using proactiv for at least 3 yrs and it's pretty awesome. my acne has cleared but those dreadful acne scars are left behind
15I love Proactiv! It's the only product that has helped my skin.
16WARNING to any black person using proactive put on sunscreen. I stop using it because it was making my face darker than the rest of my body.
17Another option if Proactiv doesn't work for you is the Clinique Acne Solutions 3 step kit. It is much gentler on the face and doesn't just stop working..
18I bought the cleanser from my dermatologist, but have yet to try it. I hope that it alone will do the trick, as my derm only suggested I use that one and continue with the rest of my routine as usual. Great post! Thank you.
19This is the ONLY product that works for me.
20i just cant get around the idea of putting something on my face that can bleach fabric...
21I use Proactiv as well. It's amazing on my skin. If you call when those commercials come up, it's actually only $20 a month.
22Actually the Repairing Lotion is a drying agent that you're supposed to use to spot treat. That's what a Proactiv representative I spoke too told me.
23I love their mask for spot treatment. I like Pro Activ but it's not always 100% for me more like 95%.
24i just cant get around the idea of putting something on my face that can bleach fabric...
I completely agree, honeycreep.
25i dont think I will ever be able to come off of it. proactiv is like a drug to my face. it kills all my acne.
26i love Proactive! i dont know what i would have done without it! i've been using it for several years now. I would never change to anything else! My face is addicted!
27I used Proactiv for a few years but it really dried out my face and made my skin crazy - I was getting acne with super dry, peeling skin. Their products are so overpriced as well. Two years ago I switched to Dermalogica products and haven't looked back since.
28Thank you so much for this post!
29I am stuggling with my skin right now.
Currently i am trying some doctor reccomended creams and pills. I've had some success with it. It's great to hear other options for treatment and the success stories of women just like me.
As a fellow sufferer of acne, i am always so happy to hear about someones acne clearing up. what a relief! however...
JSYK I had tried proactiv in the past, used it for two years, then suddenly my skin broke out into painful cystic acne. i took a break from the proactiv and it cleared up. two years later, when my skin was acting up i decided to try proactiv again. Same thing. Extermely painful, huge cysts under the skin, some of them stayed for more than a month. I'm not sure what caused it but i'll never go to proactiv again.
30For those of you who Proactiv isn't working well for - There is also a line called Carley's Clear and Smooth...it's a more natural line - and not oil free, but it balances the skin and the BP kills the breakouts...and it is less expensive than proactiv. It is a scrub you use once per day along with a natural soap. I think it is really great!
31Proactiv didn't work for me, so my derm prescribed a DUAC topical gel. (benzoyl peroxide and clindamycin. Clindamycin is an antibiotic that prevents bacteria from growing on the skin.) I use a very small amount of it daily and it works better than anything i've tried!
32Thankfully I've never had an acne problem, because most acne-treatment products are beyond drying and irritating to my sensitive skin. This one sounds like it might not be so harsh, but I bet it would still irritate my skin.
I'm glad it works so well for you, Bella!
33I used Proactiv for a while, and while my skin was smoother, it wasn't really clear. I went to my dermatologist and got a few prescriptions that have helped. So, overall, for me, Proactiv wasn't worth the money. I can see it working for some people, though, and it is nice that they ship it to you regularly.
34My derm yelled at me for using Proactiv...it was tearing my skin right up. The granules in the cleanser, in particular. NOT pleasant!
35Proactive is AWFUL!!!! Not only did it not help my acne at all, but it made my skin fall off in chunks it was sooo gross!!!
36proactive worked for me for like 3 months then it just stopped.
37only use proactiv for a very VERY short period of time (2 months max) or if you need immediate results for an upcoming special occasion.
the benzoyl peroxide contained in this product is good at drying out pustules, but if you use it for a prolonged period of time your oil production and breakouts will come back with a vengeance BIG TIME. your skin will get sooo dry and parched, that it literally freaks out and works double duty to compensate for the lack of oil...that's why you'll see it works initially then gets worse.
plus they're completely overcharging you for the ingredients contained in the product. you might as well go to the drug store and buy a huge bottle of 2% benzoyl peroxide for $3 instead.
38The problem with this product is that you have to continue using it. Otherwise you'll breakout again. I've tried Nature's Cure and it gets to job done. And i don't use it religiously.
39I LOVE proactiv! I've been using it for 2 plus year and my skin has never looked better. The product leaves my skin very soft and smooth. You HAVE to be very strict about your routine, using it everyday, or it will not be effective. It took about 2 or 3 months for it to actually start working, so don't give up if you just started using it.
40I've been using it for 4 years now - the first month it was definitely worse and then it became amazing!! I wouldn't switch to anything else!!
41Proactive was my best friend before my wedding - my forehead was full of pimples (stress realted) and this stuff cleared it all up. I have recommended it to so many people
42I can't use proactive either - all it did was clog my pores and dry out my skin.
43ProActiv worked for me for a little while, but after couple of months, my skin just developed a tolerance to it and the acne came back worse than before.
44I wonder why it works for some people and not others. I want to believe its miraculous claims, but I've heard it doesn't work from so many people
