It's not often that I feel inspired by celebrity hair trends. Let's be honest: Most play it safe and B-O-R-I-N-G, but I do have to admit that there are a few brave ones out there who are taking some well-calculated risks that are paying off beautifully. And they are: drum roll, please . . .

To create Helen Mirren's elegantly tousled hair, stylist Creighton Bowman began by applying volumizing mousse to her wet hair. Then, he blew her hair dry, allowing pieces to turn out in different directions. To create body, he put the top layers in small Velcro rollers, using René Furterer Finishing Hairspray ($27) to set it. After her makeup was done, he took out the rollers and added some dry shampoo and some molding paste on the ends for added texture.
Whether it's a new bob or the addition of red highlights, celebrities are known for changing up their hairstyles with great frequency. If you had the time — not to mention the cash — how often do you think you'd switch up your coiffure? Tell us in the comments below, and be sure to vote on these five stars' new looks right now.
One of the best things about Helen Mirren is her utter fearlessness, and in a time when most women over 40 are still being told to wear conservative hairstyles, she's just gone and gotten a fierce new crop. I loved the bob she had before, but this new short cut is pretty great, too. If you had to choose a style for her, which would you say you like best on Helen?
Brilliant! I already love Carey Mulligan's pretty short cut, but last night, she really showed off the look's versatility with a fake-out bouffant that made her hair look long and voluminous. It's a perfect style for nights out or whenever you'd just like to change things up a bit. It's also a really easy style to create — all you need is a teasing comb, hair spray, and bobby pins. So to find out how to fake Carey's big, sexy hair, just keep reading.
