Would You Go Bald to Support a Friend With Cancer?

Mar 18 2014 - 12:00pm

We all live our lives attached to our hair — here at POPSUGAR Beauty, we even spend our days writing about it. That's why we were so moved when we saw how far a group of South African women went to show their support when friend Gerdi McKenna was diagnosed with breast cancer. These strong women said goodbye to their locks and shaved their heads. And they even invited photographer Alexander Bredenhaan [1] (who also happens to be bald) to document the whole touching experience. We suggest keeping a box of tissues at hand when you watch this emotional video.

"She is one amazing person. That is the least I can do," one woman said in the video. "If I can do just a little for her to feel better, I will do it with love." Gerdi's two sisters and mom all got cuts back in February. At the end, their fallen hair was donated to the Cancer Association of South Africa [2]. Of course, Gerdi was surprised by what these women did for her, but what the group couldn't predict is the worldwide awareness this shoot has sparked.
