A few years ago, I attended a Spring trends makeup class. While I don't exactly remember what shades were hot that year — although I vaguely seem to recall peacock tones — the following tip has stuck with me. You probably start your makeup regimen by applying foundation, then concealer. But, in this class, it all starts with the eyes.
Instead of having to fix eye makeup slip-ups on top of your freshly applied foundation and concealer, the whole point of the "eyes first" mentality is for easier cleanup of those minor (or sometimes major) application blunders, from mascara and liner smudges to eye shadow that spills onto the face. It's also a great way to control the intensity of your makeup look.
Just start by dabbing a primer or concealer on the eyelid. Then, apply eye shadow, liner, and mascara as usual. Finish by dotting on foundation, concealer, and the rest of your regular makeup items. Try it out — peacock tones and all. Or not.

I've always heard this by I always ending up doing my eyes towards the end, bad habit.
I do the same thing, Aimee...well, I always put on my tinted moisturizer and concealer first. Then I do my eyes.
I've always done my eyes first, even when I first started wearing make-up. I tend to overdo it at times and doing the moisturizer afterwards cleans up all the wonky lines of my eyeshadow application.
Lately I've been trying to do my eyes first. Even though it makes more sense it just feels wrong for some reason - like out of order.
interesting! i'm definitely going to try this!
I saw make-up artist Eve do this on Temptalia.com over the weekend. It's a great idea. Now, I put a sheer layer of foundation all over, do my eyes, then apply another layer of foundation where needed for more coverage.
Huumm... sounds weird! I like to put the fondation everywhere so doing the eyes first will be weird for me. Especially if you do a light make-up, there is no reasons to have to retouch the eyes a lot...
I always do my eyes last. I use BE foundation so I'm used to sweeping it over my whole face...eyes included.
I do the same, foundation everywhere, even eyes. The one time I tried this, I ended up smearing my carefully winged eyeliner.
No thanks.
i let my sister do my makeup the other day and she did eyes first. it was weird but it turned out nice. i tried to do eyes first again yesterday and it was weiiiird! when i tried putting foundation on i had to be careful not to go over my eyeshadow. i think i'll stick with my old routine.
I really can't do it that way. I could try but I would wanna just put foundation all over...also I tend to wing my eye liner and its just not work if I put my foundation on last.
I always do my eye make up first, I get mascara all over my eye lids and then take it off with q-tips. Works for me!
triste, do you put your eyeshadow on after your mascara? i've tried it a few times only to end up with strangely shimmering lashes
I've only recently started doing this, and I realized that I don't need as much foundation as I thought I did once my eyes were made up.
I always do foundation first since I also apply it to my eyelids.
I do this when I actually put on eyeshadow and do a smokey or something. But there is no need to do it with my every day eyeliner and a swipe of mascara.
I tried doing this method this morning, and I got all screwed up. I forgot to put primer on before my foundation (since I did my eyes first) and then I forgot the bronzer. Oh well. I usually do foundation then concealer, then eyes, cheeks, etc. I usually do use foundation on my eyes, so this felt weird to me.
I usually do my other makeup first but when I am wearing heavy eyeshadow I try to start on the eyes - not often though.
I use foundation first, so I start out with a nice even canvas (it helps even out my freckles) and then I use a pencil to fill in my eyebrows, then blush last the eyes. Works best for me, no problems.
In response to RrrenMags, yes, I put my eyeshadow on after my mascara. Sometime I'll get eyeshadow on my eyelashes but I just have to be very careful! =)
Before doing any powder shadow, dust loose finishing powder under the eye (where your under eye circles would live.) When your application is finished, dust the powder and rogue eye shadow off and continue your regiment. This is a very good idea for ladies who beautify their eyes last. Hope this helps. .- mfs
Nope. Can't do it that way. I did it once and went to go put on my foundation and forgot I had eyeshadow on and effed it up.
I do my eyes first when I'm going to do a smokey eye or if I'm planning to try out a new eye look. But on a normal day I like to do my eyes last. I guess since I've done it that way so long it's the way I'm most comfortable with.
I always do my eyes first - it avoids messy cleanups after!
