Thakoon’s West Coast Girl Gets a New York Makeover

“The inspiration is about a Seattle girl who moves to New York and then becomes aware of fashion,” explained manicure pro Gina Edwards for Morgan Taylor Lacquer backstage at Thakoon. The resulting beauty look was partly sporty, a bit DIY, and very earthy.

For hair, Odile Gilbert on behalf of Kérastase created the postgym, sweaty look we've seen before. Roots were coated in gel and pulled back, and the rest of the hair was fluffy, thanks to dry shampoo. "It’s the story of a girl who went to the gym, so she has beautiful hair, but she’s been sweating," Odile explained.

Diane Kendal for Nars gave the models minimal makeup that focused on just a brown smudge under the eyes, created with a brown pencil and reddish-chocolate brown shadow on top. "The inspiration was a girl from Northwest America who loves Patagonia and comes to New York to shop, so she has a very free sense of fashion," said Kendal. And why only wear makeup under the eyes? "[It looks] easier, younger, more spontaneous — like the girl had done it herself in just five minutes," she offered.

The nails were painted in a mushroom hue: Latte Please by Morgan Taylor Lacquer in Latte Please ($9). "Thakoon [Panichgul] wanted a color that was very earthy and down to earth that didn't pick up any color in the collection," Edwards said.
