Topical Botox-Style Gel Is Probably on Its Way

If you'd consider getting 'toxed if only it weren't for the whole needles-in-your-face thing, you may not have to worry about that much longer. A company called Revance has completed Phase 2 testing of a topical botulinum A toxin gel. A doctor simply applies to your skin and then wipes off after it's sunk in.

Dr. Fredric Brandt (yep, that Dr. Brandt) participated in the study and was pleased with what he saw, saying that the gel "represents a natural evolution in the treatment regimen, which will appeal to a whole new segment of patients." The treatment is supposed to be especially good for people with crow's feet or hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) because the multiple injections required to treat both areas often cause bruising and discomfort. Do you think a topical gel would be a hit?

My teenage niece suffers from Hyperhidrosis (excessive and uncontrollable sweating) of the hands, feet and underarms. She's isolating herself from her peers because she doesn't want anyone to know about this embarrassing problem. She's such a pretty girl but I seriously fear that she's going to end up like the 40 year old virgin and many people with Hyperhidrosis really do end up like that. It's quite sad. The Botox injections for the hands and feet to treat this condition are extremely painful and even the anesthesia options are very painful. I truly hope this topical Botox will work very well for Hyperhidrosis and I hope the FDA will approve it soon! They say as long as the company pays them well enough the FDA will approve anything. LOL

I'm no expert, but isn't the point of botox to inject the toxin into the specific muscle you want to paralyze? I can't see how this would even work. I know that there are certain muscles that the doctors avoid and don't inject, so as not to disrupt certain functions of your face.

I thought it sounded good until I found out a doctor had to do it (well I guess that does make good sense) - it's just that I wouldn't go out of my way to make an appointment and pay out the nose for this. so I still wouldn't probably use it.
