Trend Alert: Heavily Lined Eyes

Heavily lined eyes have been a part of beauty for decades. The trend began in the 60's mod era, and we can see it recreated by Sienna Miller playing Edie Sedgwick in Factory Girl. Since then, it's made appearances in the 70's, in bright colors in the 80's and again in black in the 90's. Now in 2007, stars are wearing this look on the red carpet.

Lined eyes make a strong statement and are usually seen in shades of black, gray and slate. You can either create a cat eye with a winged tip, a smoky eye, a smudged rocker look or even create a dramatic and dark lower line with a hint of metallic like we saw for the Fall 2007 Luca Luca Show. Nowadays you can't go wrong with a sexy, heavy eye—and that's the bottom line.

love, love, love. i recommend liquid eyeliner because normal eyeliner is just too fiddly as the night wears on.

I love the look, but I feel like it isn't very "daytime summer." But I'm in California, and it's hot and sweaty and sunny... too much makeup is just too much makeup in the summer time. Great for evenings, clubbing, and fancy affairs!

I only wear heavily lined eyes if Im going out at night - but I do love the look (even if it takes me a few tries to get it right) ;)

I use eyeliner everyday, but just a light line. The dramatic heavy look is great for people in the spotlight, but I think it would look a little silly one someone just out doing errands or whatever.

I love a smokey eye, but there's a limit. Angelina looks great, Amy looks like she's trying too hard, like always. Keira Knightley is another one whose basic smokey eye and pale lip I love, but who takes it too far sometimes. There are times she looks like she was in a brawl and got socked in both sockets. It's a matter of where you put it. I have closed-in eyes, so you can't see most of the shadow so I can get away with more, but when your dark eyeshadow reaches the browbone and all the way down to your undereye circles, it's time to pare it back.

I can't wear heavy eyeliner because my eyes are already too round, and liner would just add too much. It doesnt look good upclose. I like light lined eyes.

im big on thick eye liner, when i dont wear it my eyes look boring, and the only "hot topic kids" who look stupid with thick eyeliner are ones who think they're brandon lee in "The Crow"

I wear this on a daily basis- my personal tip is that if you go heavy on the eyes, skip the lips. A nice gloss will be fine, but stay away from reds and plums- if you try to 'balance' the heavy eyes with heavy lip colour it generally is overkill.

The best how-to is practice practice practice! Play around with thin lines, thick lines, or lines that get thicker as they pass to the outside of the eye. Also, you can smudge up the eyeliner line with a little bit of a sharpened kohl pencil if the line is too harsh for your taste. I love wearing eyeliner during the day, but I do play down other aspects of my makeup...
