Picking Makeup Colors: What Works and What Doesn't

There are a lot of factors that go into choosing makeup shades whether it's determining if you have cool or warm undertones to figuring out which eye shadow hues "go" with your coloring.

There are a lot of factors that go into choosing makeup shades whether it's determining if you have cool or warm undertones to figuring out which eye shadow hues "go" with your coloring. But celebrity makeup artist, Vincent Longo, wants to make something clear. "When it comes to eye shadows and lip color, women should be free to experiment and have fun. A woman's eye color should not determine what eye shadow hue goes on the eyes."

So, don't be afraid to mix and match warms and cools, as Longo explains:
For example:
Brown eyes (warm) can look beautiful with blue eye shadow (cool) — as seen on Keri Hilson.
Blue eyes (cool) can look great with brown eye shadow (warm).
Green eyes (cool/neutral) can look fantastic with topaz eye shadow (warm).
Hazel eyes (warm/neutral) can look stunning with purple eye shadow (cool).

And when in doubt:
Longo recommends the following universally flattering colors: for the eyes, go with a brown, beige, or black, as found in Vincent Longo Cosmetics' lip stain in Cherry ($23) or Perfect Shine gloss in Ella ($22); and for the cheeks, you can't go wrong with a warm coral.

But do be careful with blush and foundation:
"If you get the foundation or blush shade wrong and not matched to the skin tone, this can look ghastly," Longo says. (Be sure to check out these tips for picking the right foundation and choosing the right blush color.)

Vincent Longo Cosmetics Set to Make a Big Comeback

Due in part to a failing economy back in 2008, Vincent Longo Cosmetics was eventually forced to pull its products from the shelves of retail giants such as Sephora, Neiman Marcus, Fred Segal, and Nordstrom.

Due in part to a failing economy back in 2008, Vincent Longo Cosmetics was eventually forced to pull its products from the shelves of retail giants such as Sephora, Neiman Marcus, Fred Segal, and Nordstrom. Space NK, however, still kept the indie brand's stock in supply. But now, Vincent Longo is set to make a big comeback.

Last year, the company began selling its products in CVS Pharmacy's Beauty 360. And with a new investor in place, Vincent Longo himself is now again able to work on what he's known for: creating innovative, stand-out formulations.

He'll completely revamp everything except for complexion products. New items will include Liquid Concealer ($28), formulated with arnica and peptides to reduce dark circles and puffiness; Pearl X Eyeshadows ($25), baked shadows with speckled colors; and Perfect Shine V Gloss ($22), glimmery pearl lip colors that add temporary volume. To see what other brand is also making moves to rise from the ashes, just keep reading.

2009 Fall New York Fashion Week: Vena Cava

Every season, the cool downtown girls head to Vena Cava to see what they'll want to wear to their art-gallery jobs.

Every season, the cool downtown girls head to Vena Cava to see what they'll want to wear to their art-gallery jobs. This time around, the collection featured motorcycle jackets, high-waisted jeans, and dyed leggings.

Working off of the clothing's dark color palette, makeup artist Vincent Longo — working with Beauty.com — created a simple but striking makeup look: a shock of orange at the lashline. "It's a contrast to the collection," he said, "to give life to the dark tones." While the skin was matte, lips had a creamy finish thanks to his Velvet Riche lipstick in Hush Delight.

And the hair? This season's Vena Cava girl, said the lead stylist Ted Gibson for Beauty.com, is hip but not too crazy. "She's the girl who danced all night and slicked some gel in her hair the next morning," he said of his inspiration. To get the rockabilly-chic look, he pushed hair back from the sides for a fun, devil-may-care style. Check it out in these pictures:

Bella Bargain: 30% Off Vincent Longo Beauty

Holiday gift sets already provide good value, but now the prices are pretty unbelievable on Vincent Longo.

Holiday gift sets already provide good value, but now the prices are pretty unbelievable on Vincent Longo. Sephora is shaving 30 percent off much of the brand's inventory, and the deals are pretty good:

  • Amalfi Dream ($40.60, a $125 value) is a six-piece set featuring an eye shadow trio, lip gloss, double-sided lip pencil, lipstick, eye soufflé, and mascara.
  • The Lip Luster Set ($26.60, an $89 value) has two lip/cheek gel stains, a lip gloss, and best of all, Rosewood Luster gloss, one of my favorites. That alone costs $22, so you do the math.
  • Venus Envy ($33.60, a $101 value) is a five-piece set with a coral-and-blue theme.

Lipstick

In Lieu of All Else Red Lipstick

The Parisians have always had a unique take on makeup, never quite natural but certainly not done up, and that neither too much nor too little aesthetic has manifested itself in the strong presence of very red lips on the Spring 2009 catwalks as dare we say the sole focal point of the season's beauty.

The Parisians have always had a unique take on makeup, never quite natural but certainly not done up, and that neither too much nor too little aesthetic has manifested itself in the strong presence of very red lips on the Spring 2009 catwalks as dare we say the sole focal point of the season's beauty. Maison Martin Margiela's anonymous model with its red lips however brings up a more interesting point for us, in that what we view as feminine in an increasingly gender conflicted world can so often come down to cultural signifiers or simplistic markers. Paris would seem to be telling us that in lieu of all else look to the red lips.

Lookalike Products: Creamy Shimmering Bronzing Sticks

It's the season for glowing, (faux) tan skin and with all of the products on the market right now, it's easier than ever to achieve that look.

It's the season for glowing, (faux) tan skin and with all of the products on the market right now, it's easier than ever to achieve that look. However, choosing the right product can be challenging, especially when two similar items such as Nars the Multiple in St. Barth's and Vincent Longo Hydro Stick in Gold Solare exist. Both are beautiful for your eyes, cheeks, and lips, both are light in color and texture, and both create a sexy-tanned illumination on the skin. Take a look at my comparative table below to see which item I feel is more splurge worthy.

Nars the Multiple Vincent Longo Hydro Stick Advantage
Texture It has a light, cream-to-powder finish. It blends well and the color is buildable. One strike is all you need since the color is deep. It blends well and is designed to create a wet, dewy effect. Also it has an slightly cooling effect. Nars. I prefer the lighter color since it allows you to keep layering until you reach your desired tan.
Luminosity Leaves a subtle, pearlized glow on your skin that catches the light but isn't too overbearing. Has a powerful and vibrant high-shine, frosty finish. Nars. I'm not crazy about icy frosts.
Color Medium-taupey-bronze. Great for any skin tone. Bronze with a twinge of orangey-copper. Great for those with olive or dark skin. Nars. It's softer and more versatile.
Price $37 $25 Vincent Longo by 12 bucks.

Shout Out I Heart Makeup: Ice Ice Baby

I Heart Makeup is our source for all things Indian and beauty related in the community.
I Heart Makeup is our source for all things Indian and beauty related in the community. Her coverage of India Fashion Week inspired us to explore it right here on Coutorture. Today she is showcasing a more unusual trend that we often think of as being reserved for very Blond women from the South. We are talking about frosty eyes! I Heart Makeup is seeing it on Bollywood stars.
This actually got us inspired because really who couldn't use a little bit of fun with some frosty looks? She suggests NARS Duo Eyeshadow Cream in Thebes but we think that Vincent Longo's Wet Diamond Eyeshadow is how we would play it. This creamy soft, full color eye powder with light reflective pearls is perfect for playing with the new frosty Bollywood starlet looks. Applied dry a sheer veil affect brightens the eyes if you want to go a little more subtle. When applied wet it turns into a shimmering cream that lasts for hours without creasing. We suggest White Sparkle or Jewel 69 for the ultimate fun and frosty looks. Its not just for Texans or Sorority girls anymore! And just because we are feeling funky on Monday we decided to share our favorite old school Bollywood routine Jaan Pehechaan Ho. Underneath the masks we are betting these lovely ladies have frosted eyes. Check Out More Shoutouts Here
