I believe in suffering for beauty, but only to an extent. You've all probably heard about the out-there ingredients used in the name of looking good. Some of them are (or were) dangerous, if not deadly. Others give me the heebie jeebies just thinking about them. And then there are the ones that are just plain indecent. 12I knew about ambergris, hence the name, didn't know about bull semen but it doesn't really bug me.
13Carmine is also a PAIN to get out of anything if you're doing research. I've learned to wear utter CRAP out in the field, because bugs stain things to the point that even bleach doesn't always help.
And diatoms are indeed lovely...I'm actually doing research on copepods (one of the ones I work with is rainbow colored!), and I find lots of them in my samples. So pretty...like living snowflakes.

22I'm not sure how gross it is, just a lil disturbing. After all when I think about what goes into our food supply (even grosser), then I'm not too surprised by these exotic ingredients. People will go to the far reaches of the Earth for the sake of beauty. I just hope that in that quest, they remember that life is more precious. What's the point in looking beautiful in a casket?
23I had to give up my beloved Benetint when I realized what carmine actually is. It sucked because it was more or less the only make up I wore and made me look healthy and awake when I was feeling exhausted.
