Much like the fashion world has sample sales, the beauty industry is developing its own private sale sites. As more and more brands struggle in a tough economy, sites such as Gilt Groupe, The Fairest, BeautyTicket, and the invitation-only Rue La La provide slashed prices and bundled bargains on excess product or outdated packaging to members.

While some critics claim that deep discounts are essentially cheapening brands in the long run, others view it as a sign of the changing times. "Initially, it may have been something to do with the recession," Paula Scandone of HauteLook told WWD. "It really comes down to acquiring new customers. As we know, customers are not shopping the same way they used to, and they never will again." What do you think about these private sale sites?
