What's the Worst Beauty Trend You've Ever Tried?

Since you've been here on this fine planet, there are lots of beauty trends that have come and gone — and plenty I'm sure you'd rather forget. Claw bangs, overtweezed brows, and rings of brown lip liner, anyone?

Perhaps it hasn't always been about attempts at certain techniques or hairstyles that just didn't work, but more about color trends. Greige nail polish or the latest turquoise eye shadow, for instance, might look amazing on your best friend, but lacks that certain oomph for you. What trend, past or present, have you tried that just fell flat on its face?

I used Dep hair gel in junior high for a textured, piecey look. They had six different formulas. It didn't matter, using any of them resulted in extra crunchy, dirty looking hair. Brushing through it later in the day created large hair gel flakes. Yikes!

The Bettie Page hair can look cute, but it can be difficult to pull off. Those tiny tiny bangs look amazing on some people, but would just showcase my fivehead.

Worst beauty trends I have tried: 1. Permed, frizzy hair (when the perm was really popular; early 90's). 2. Stoned washed jeans 3. "Bettie Page" do (dyed my hair black and cut my bangs just like hers. Lasted a good 2 years, but never had any good compliments from it. I can't do Bettie, that's for sure!). 4. French manicure (had it done only 1 time and hated it after; 1999. Broke after playing some basketball; it was mandatory, I was in the Army then). 5. Bushing eyebrows (that only works great on Brooke Shields, not me).

Really tweezed shaped eyebrows, which really isn't a trend but a choice. People still do it, and I choose not to tweeze as much. I catch a few strays and go for the strong Brooke Shields look.

Ewwwe...french manicures. I totally did that in high school, too. It would TEAR UP my nails, and they'd seriously hurt, but I thought you had to do it to look nice. Now it reminds me of the girls on Jersey Shore.

Blue/purple/whatever hair in high school. Though I have to say, orange looked great and was super fun, I might be tempted to do it again. I've only grown out of it partly, I have naturally dirty-dishwater-brownish-blonde hair and it's an awful color, so I feel like that gives me license to switch indiscriminately between shades of brown/red/jet-black/blonde. I'm actually peroxide blonde now, and I couldn't love it more. I also remember a pearly pink cover-girl lipstick from junior high, yuck, Only Barbie could pull something like that off and I'm no Barbie.

I used to get gel nails in a french manicure in high school. It was the style in the late 90's, early 00's, but I find it so tacky now.

@exchequette---You mentioned "perm" and I had a horrible hair flashback of the perm I got...I paid a lot of money to end up looking like, as Barbra Striesand would say, "a poodle on crack!" LOL My shoulder-length hair became crunchy and broke off at the roots. So much for "fashionable". LOL

I am loving these stories. I used to wear white eyeliner under my eyebrows because I read somewhere that it would accentuate them. It accentuated them for sure — but not in a good way!

In 9th grade I was a big fan of the "blind toddler did my eyeliner with a sharpie" look. And I paired it with purpley red lipstick- urban decay's "manic depression." Because nothing says 'hardcore' like a short blonde girl in badly done facepaint.

I got a perm in 8th grade and it was horrible to grow out - after the first two weeks, nothing I tried would decrease the frizz, and that perm STUCK, until all the permed hair grew out. I also tried the claw bangs for awhile, but it never quite worked with my hair - I probably wasn't using enough hairspray. I've always been pretty tame about makeup - if a trend isn't flattering for me, I won't wear it out of the house. It's clothes that I get hung up on... I'm getting to be that age (30) where the young, hip styles look too childish for me, but I don't want to wear mature clothes yet, either. Sometimes I just go too far in either direction.

for a little while in middle school, i lined my top lid with white or light blue pencil. yuck :/ i can't believe i did that!

The pale/nude lipstick trend...my skin tone is pale so I looked like super "washed out". Also, the super bright blue eye shadow trend...not one of my best style decisions LOL ;)

When I was in 8th/9th grade a few years ago I wore really thick eye liner. A lot of people were wearing dark makeup at the time but looking back it was horrible.

In 9th grade (1997), I used to wear this horrible pink pastel, shiny eye shadow made by Cover Girl. I loved it and got lots of compliments on it! But thinking back on it now... Ewwww!

The smokey/intense eye look. Especially with those nude/pink lips that were so popular for the early aughts. I have dark under eye circles, so the heavy eye shadow always made me look like I was a derelict who got punched in the eye. Funny, Pastel eye shadows never worked either, I mostly stick to nudes.
