When You Were a Kid, Did You Ask For Makeup For the Holidays?

Recently, a friend of mine described the following scenario: After paying $20 for her 4-year-old daughter to have pictures taken with Santa, the jolly old man asked the little girl what she wanted for Christmas. She said makeup. He belted out a big fat no. Tears ensued.

While I don't condone extreme primping for little girls, I don't see much harm in gifting a plastic toy makeup set or nontoxic kiddie nail polish to a child. I recall asking for makeup when I was a wee Bella, but mostly of the very innocent Lip Smackers or peel-off Tinkerbell nail paints. My parents definitely made the distinction between the adult makeup and the toy stuff. What about you?

I had a collection of bonne bell lip gloss and nail polish when I was a kid, but I had no real interest in make-up growing up.

My parents never had problems with giving me makeup, but my dad was shocked since he deemed it as a thing to "attract attention from guys". I would usually glare back at him, 'cause it was mostly me trying to imitate Amy Lee and not Barbie.I don't have a problem with makeup for kids though, just nothing like bronzer. That would be just a little odd...

I asked for makeup, but I never got any. The best beauty gift I ever got as a kid was a set of 5 Love's Baby Soft fragrances. I can't remember them all exactly, but I think there was the original, a musk version, a "rain" version, a lemon version, and one other... I cherished those.

My mom bought me one of those cheap lip glosses with the rollerball you can find near the registers at Target or Wal-mart, but that's about it...

I never asked because my I knew my parents would say no. But I remember being interested in makeup even when I was in elementary school. In junior high, I would put makeup on right after my mom dropped me off and scrub it off just before she picked me up. I did this until junior year high school. I still love makeup and my obsession is rubbing off on my daughter a bit (she's 4). I told her my makeup is off limits but I gave her a Bonne Belle Lipsmacker and I polish her toes pink every now and then.

Nah, not really. My parents got it for me anyway, but not until I was probably 10 or something. I liked Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles more. Makeup is such a weird thing. Expensive facepaint.

Yes I did and i got makeup and lipgloss kits every year. That's why it's so funny that I don't wear a stitch of makeup now.

My mom didn't wear much makeup, so I wasn't particularly interested in it until I was about 13 or 14. I remember being in the drugstore and asking for a lipgloss and the request being met with a horrified look and "You're young; you don't need to put color on your face. It'll make you look old and ugly." Sigh. Now I'm a Sephora regular and my mom tells me that I put too many 'chemicals' on my face since I use moisturizer. I come from a rather judgmental household. hehe.

When I was a toddler plastic makeup wasn't good enough since it didn't actually apply color. I resorted to markers and colored pencils before my mom went to the dollar store and got me REAL makeup to play with. She still teases me about it, she rarely wore makeup, so she doesn't have a clue where this obsession with it came from. Especially at such an early age.

When I was a kid, they had a "Make it Yourself Makeup Kit" called "Fresh and Fancy"... omg... I LOVED that. I asked or it every single year!!! I can still sing the commercial! Anybody remember that?

I loved my bonne belle and lip smackers presents when i was a little girl. Or my mom would get me this waxy makeup for children that looked really colorful, but when you put it on, it was barely any color at all. Ooh and remember the barbie heads that you could put makeup on and do their hair! Loved those!
