I think it's happened to us all. You head to the store to stock up on your favorite lipstick that you've worn for years, only to be informed by the clerk that it's been discontinued. Panic strikes, then anger. You wonder how and why this could happen.
Don't take it personally. Cosmetics companies frequently switch up inventories to make way for new technology and trends. Often, it's the lower-selling items that suffer the most. But don't fret, because there are tips and tricks to track down shades that have fallen victim to discontinuation. Get the details when you read more.
- Customize: They don't call themselves Three Custom Color Specialists for nothing. The company will custom blend to re-create your favorite shades. Prescriptives offers a similar service, too.
- Power of the people: If you're upset about an item being discontinued, let the company know about it. Who knows? They might just reconsider if they hear from enough diehard fans.
- Check the websites: Many brands have special sections of their websites devoted entirely to products that are being or have been discontinued, like Estée Lauder's Gone But Not Forgotten program or Urban Decay's R.I.P. Items section.
- Hit the discount stores and overstock sites: Hello, TJ Maxx for perfume, and Cosmetics and More and BuyMeBeauty.com for low-cost finds. Don't forget about Overstock.com for discontinued goods as well.
- Auction: There's no place like eBay when it comes to long lost cosmetics. Just don't get suckered by counterfeit makeup.
- Change with the times: Change is a constant. Take it as an opportunity to try out a new shade. Better yet, many companies offer up suggestions for replacements, like CoverGirl's In With the New page.
- Swaparoo: If exchanging makeup with strangers feels OK, the "swap" feature from Makeup Alley might just score you the goods.

I found my favorite discontinued perfume on eBay the other day. I was so happy.
1When I saw your headline, I immediatley thought of 3 Custom Color. I've been buying a lipstick shade from them for a few years now since my fave shade from Diane von Furstenberg's makeup line was discontinued (and so was the line). They do a great job matching. They also list the matches they've already done, so you can lookup a shade, and if it's been matched before, you don't have to send in a sample of the makeup for them to match.

3Good to know!
4Great stories!!
5Good tips. This seems to happen to me a lot.
6If it is a Mary Kay or Avon color, your consultant can contact other consultants to see if they have it in stock.
7I can think of a few beloved products of mine that have been discontinued over the years...I used to love a lipgloss made by Bath and Body Works back in the late '90s/early 2000s, but then they stopped making their makeup line! So bummed. They also used to have this lotion that I LOVED, I think it was called Pure Innocence, but they stopped making it. I wrote to them to tell them how disappointed I was--I don't recall even getting a response. They don't even bring it back for those sales they do sometimes, with all the discontinued lotions
8I still feel very nostalgic about a certain shampoo that got discontinued years ago. I don't even remember the name, all I know is that is was with honey, that is was so silky, soft and great smelling. I really miss that shampoo. I wish I'd remember the name though ...
9It's happened to me. The ONLY lipliner I've ever LOVED and that I'd be willing to shell some bucks for was discontinued for NO reason whatsoever. I still cry about it
10If you live in the DC area, there is a cosmetics outlet at the Leesburg Premium Outlets. They have lots of things there that have been discontinued by Origins, Estee Lauder, MAC, Clinique...and, it's also where Free Gift With Purchases go to die. There are bins and bins of the little gems you can just pick up for super cheap. I put together phenomenal goody bags there for my bridesmaids a couple of years ago.
11emalove i agree B&BW are always discontinuing my favorite scents!! i lovedd this scent called crystal blue waters and they discontinued it! before i had time to stock up!
12make up shades, I can deal with, but I'd kill to have St Ives Jojoba Shampoo/Conditioner bacl
13Great advice!! I am getting more into wearing make-up and I finally found a shade of lipstick that I love. Now I know what to do if the perfect shade is discontinue.
14Oh geez, Bath and Body Works is the worst for discontinuing products out of the blue! Don't ever get attached to anything they make! As for my favorite discontinued thing overall--Aussie used to make this shampoo that my hair loved. My stylist commented on how healthy my hair looked. I don't remember the exact name anymore; I used a different Aussie shampoo, and never got the same effect. Sigh.
15I got snookered on some fake Bath and Body Works stuff...the seller had clearly dumped cheap coconut lotion into a Creamy Coconut Body Cream tube. I had a tough time getting my money back, lemme tell you
16there was this JANE lipliner back when I was in high school that I LOVED. it was like the PERFECT color for my lips. gone. so sad. I'll try to check these sites out but man I don't even remember what it was called!
17Great tips thank you! I miss Flamingo lipstick by Chanel so so much.
18Great ideas!
19Love that you have a lot of places to go! I wrote a similar one just focusing on three custom here: http://beautyandthefeastblog.com/index.php/the-lovely/have-you-ever-had-...
