I know, I know—it's weird to be talking about sunblock in January. And yet, when you think about it, there's no better time. The absolute best thing you can do for your skin this year is to start wearing SPF every single day. Don't believe me? Well, let me tell you a little story.
In high school, I worked at a beachside shop. One day, two sisters came in to try on swimsuits. One looked like a high schooler, and the other looked about 26. When they came to the checkout counter, the older sister opened her wallet. "That's really nice of you to buy your sister a swimsuit," I said. Both sisters started laughing, because they weren't sisters—they were mother and daughter. Crazy! When I asked the mother how she looked so young, she said, "Well, I've been wearing sunblock every day since I was a teenager."
Look, there's no other way to put it: The sun will make you look older. It won't if you wear sunblock. Wear it every day, and you'll prevent most of the spots and wrinkles associated with aging. And on a less frivolous note, you'll be maintaining the health of your skin by minimizing the risk of UV-related cancers such as melanoma. Summing up, then: Wearing sunblock keeps you looking young and prevents cancer. Skipping it... doesn't. Seems like a simple choice, right?
For tips on how to make wearing sunblock a habit you'll easily keep, read more.
Read the label
Look for a sunblock with SPF 15 or 30, and look for a broad-spectrum product that blocks both UVA and UVB rays. UVA rays are the ones that cause your skin to age more quickly, while UVB rays are potentially cancer-causing. Also, look for ingredients like Mexoryl, octocrylene, titanium dioxide, Helioplex, and zinc oxide—all of which are ingredients that won't break down in the sun.
Use a sunblock that's also a moisturizer
Simplify your morning routine by using a combination product. I don't recommend relying on a SPF-infused foundation or a primer alone. Instead, look for a moisturizer that's also a sunblock. I've tried dozens, but I always come back to Anthelios SX ($29). The lightweight lotion sinks into your skin quickly, doesn't leave any weird white residue, and isn't greasy.
Try it for two weeks
If you're not used to wearing sunblock, stick a Post-It note on your bathroom mirror. (If you really want to be nutty, print out this picture as a reminder of why you're doing this.) After two weeks of daily sunblock application, I bet you'll find it becomes a habit.
Be patient
Sunblock is one of those beauty products that doesn't reveal its full benefits immediately. But with constant use, it'll really begin to pay off when you're in your late 20s and 30s. And even if you're already at that age—or past it!—you'd be surprised to see what a difference it can still make into the decades to come. You'll have to trust me on this, but I promise you won't regret the sunblock.

UGG
Sunblock/moisturizer combo is easy to remember.
1I love Clinique City Block. It works as a light foundation (it keeps my powder looking fresh), and it has anti-oxidents in it too.
2The picture of the puppy is too adorable!
I'm really glad you posted this up! It's a good reminder for me, because I always forget to put on my moisturizer, let alone sunblock!
3I've heard it takes 21 days to form a habit. This one is easy though, as you sai Bella, if it's a moisturizer with SPF. I like my Eucerin anti-aging moisturizer with SPF 15. Very lightweight and it doesn't come out greasy, at least not on my skin.
4Eh... sleeping in colored moisturizer is a bit strange... I have a bit of an obsession with getting my makeup off at night, so I'm not sure I'd want to put more on just to go to bed...
5Oops. I didn't mean to put that there. I will definitely be wearing subnblock, tho...
6I always use face moisturizer with SPF, but I wish more body lotions had sunscreen in them. I tried the Neutrogena sunscreen that's supposed to be hydrating like a lotion, but it just peeled and flaked off my skin. I know Kiehl's has a body lotion with sunscreen, but that's a little out of my price range. Anyone have any suggestions?
7Sun is a major factor of skin-aging. I am in my mid 30s (fair/combination skin) & live in Southern Europe and I do believe that a reason for my very few and very ... discreet fine lines (besides good genes & not smoking) is my wearing sunblock all year round.
SPF15/25 is not enough in summer anymore, so I switched to La Roche-Posay 50+ Fluide Extreme (Anthelios XL line) - it's a great oil-free sunblock. During winter I wear Hydraphase XL Legere (again from La Roche-Posay) which is the SPF15 version of the Hydraphase moisturizer. It's light & smells great (like Estee Lauder DayWear Plus). Bonus: LRP products are not expensive (at least here in Europe).
8I just had a look at the ingredients in my sun spray, and wow - I'm not sure what I'd rather have, between wrinkles and applying all these chemicals every day!
Since I want to keep my dear moisturizer, can I just spray a bit of sunblock on my face every morning? If yes, is there any recommeded drugstore sunblock?
9Yess!
10I'm 14 and I wear spf 70 sunscreen every day on my face, spf 50 everywhere else.
I really don't want to look like I'm 50 when I'm 30!
Good on yeh, Chapsticknchanel. It'll pay off.
Redscorpio, I envy you. La Roche-Posay isn't cheap in the States, so whenever I travel to France, I become a LRP-hoarding weirdo. But you're right, the prices are very reasonable in Europe.
As far as drugstore versions go, Neutrogena has some newer ones that are broad-spectrum. I haven't tried them but I hear good things about them—aside from Hboogie's experience, of course.
Finally, if you have a HSA or Flex account through your job, I'm pretty sure you can deduct sunblocks as a medical expense. This is what I do, which helps ease the pain on the wallet.
11It's true. I've been using a sunscreen moisturizer for many years. I'm seeing the pay-off now. Nowadays, people my age are looking much older than me.
12Very very important!!!!!
13I'm adamant about wearing sunblock every day. I usually just wear the moisturizer with it, but in the summer i slather it all over my exposed skin.
14I think I'll start tommorrow! The only thing is that sunblock looks kinda greasy sometimes!
15"while UVB rays protect against cancer-causing rays"
typo? editing mistake? sorry, i'm super picky, especially since it says EXACTLY what it's not
also, sunblock has to be REAPPLIED every few hours! when sunblock gets absorbed into the inner layers of the skin, and is no longer on the outer layer, it can actually HARM you by
(a) leaving your outer skin exposed to UV rays
(b) reacting with the UV rays to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS)
i got this info from wikipedia and i didn't really get to look at primary articles, but anyway, it doesn't hurt to reapply! BETTER SAFE THAN SORRY!
16oh! and i find that shiseido sunscreen lotion isn't oily. but it leaves me white-ish, and i'm very tan, so i end up looking purple.
i also use dermalogica spf products.
but no matter what i use, i tend to mix it into my moisterizer... do you think that's okay? i think so... the dermalogica is an spf booster anyway
17THanks for the catch, isahrangme. I was pretty sleepy when I wrote this post, so I missed that. Thanks again — I'll fix
18I use Bare Escentuals foundation which has SPF 15 ....do you think that's enough ??
19I've used a couple of different moisturizers with sunblock. I used to only use the bare escentuals foundation (bare minerals) and while yes, it does have SPF15, blocking UVB rays, it doesn't have the right ingredients to block UVA rays - which unfortunately are much more damaging. I moved to using Neutrogena Anti-oxidant Age Reverse SPF25 (with the Helioplex) before the foundation, but I have dry skin, and Neutrogena proved not moisturizing enough for me, especially since I live in the Northeast U.S. It may work better in the summer. I've been using Clinique Superdefense Triple Action Moisturizer SPF 25 - Very Dry to Dry for a month now, and its working great. My friend who has oily/acne-prone skin, uses the same moisturizer for Combination Oily to Oily, and she loves it too. She's worn it all day and it never felt greasy on her face.
Whew that was a long one!
20I use Neutrogena Spf55 w/ helioplex; then other days I wear Pro-activ spf15. When I'm by the pool in the summer I wear an SPF55 or 70 on my body and SPF55 on my face.
21last year (wow, weird to say that now!), i committed to wearing sunscreen every day and i have to admit that i like to make the conscious effort of adding the spf protection. i'm in my 20s now, so i hope it'll pay off in 10 years.
22Thanks for the tip about Neutrogena, Bella!
23I have photoallergic dermatitis (or Solar dermatitis) so um I never go a day without sunblock - no less than SPF 60 everywhere and if it is sunny I wear a SPF rated hat. And I'm freaking brown-skinned.
I want those new sunblocks from Europe with the better UVA & UVB blocks than we have here in the US. But the FDA won't allow them, you gotta sneak em in.
24I always try to incorporate sunblock into my daily facial care; living in Florida, it's important! My MAC face primer has SPF 50 and my moisturizer has SPF 15. I can protect my face without feeling greasy or smelling like coconuts!
25what's a good body moisturizer?
26i am still looking for a good, photostable sunscreen from a company that does not do animal testing.. in the meantime i am still wearing la roche posay that i too got in France. such a catch 22.
27I live in Missouri and the weather changes constantly so one day my skin is dry and then next its oily. I'm also a redhead, blue eyes and lots and lots of freckles...needless to say im fair skinned. I have such weird combo skin and I have tried and hated most moisturizers. I tried Aveeno's Ultra-Calming daily moisturizer with SPF 15 and I LOVE it.
28im also 19 so i hope (crosses fingers) i have a good head start on the skin with no wrinkles/no skin cancer thing
29If you're starting sunblock at 19, trust me, you will be in great shape in 10, 20 years.
I'm 10 years older than you, and people mistake me for a college student. That's why I usually dress a little more womanly than girlish, but that's another story!
30I have a red hair & fair skin that sunburns easily, and I live in Australia and Go to the beach every weekend. This means I have to be extra careful so I use clinique UV Response body spray.
31Because it is a spray it is so easy to aplly and my hands dont get that oily sunscreen feeling.
do you use a sunblock or a body moisturizer with spf everyday?
32better go to the store and buy some perfect sunscreen.
33I like aveeno with sunscreen. I know you can go higher price for a good product, but this is cheap and seems to do well with my very sensitive pale skin. I have been using sunscreen since I was about 15, and I'm 26 now and look about 20. I have no crow's feet or even the subtle wrinkle lines that come around people's mouth by the end of their twenties or beginning of their 30s. I definitely think it is important and wear it year round. I started because my complexion is the type that never could have had any type of tan anyway and it would look weird on me to have one. I have some freckles I was born with, I think, only a few, and I use sunscreen on my arms to protect my skin there, too, where it is easy to have exposure. I hear that some women don't use any on their neck and the area of their chest that may show with your typical shirt.... this is definitely an area to remember as well as your throat and back of neck.
34winter is actually a great time to talk about sun block.
I tend to use sun block pretty regularly in the summer...but by the time winter rolls around I'm out of the habit again.
But If you live where there's snow...those reflected UVA and UVB rays are just vicious!
Sunscreen is just as important all year round.
35sunblock is very important and now a lot of products have it. like moisturisers, makeup primers (smashbox one), foundations, compact powders and so on. You'll never forget to put it on!
36You don't have to wear spf at night... have two seperate moisturizers, one for the day with spf and another with treatment for night
37I plan to be the girl at our high school reunion who doesn't look like a wrinkly speckled prune. Since my girlfriends still deny that indoor tanning does any harm (tsk tsk) and I always wear the spf I think I'll be okay. I enjoy being a fair skinned lady!
38great article, Bella. i live in the Philippines so i always wear sunscreen even if it's about to rain. i'm using Hamilton Everyday Face SPF 30, a product of Australia. i can only get it from my dermatologist. i love that it is tinted and provides a sheer matte finish but my face gets oily especially during the summer. thanks for the tip about Neutrogena; i'd love to try one of their sunblocks once my Hamilton runs out.
39I'm definatly getting sunblock
40I've been wearing sunblock everyday now for years and I think it's helped keep away those nasty signs of aging. It's definitely worth the time and effort to apply.
41how much should we put on a day? like for every 2 hours, do we have to reapply?
42It's true...wearing sunblock will keep your skin looking young and healthy for years to come. Drinking lots of water also helps. What's great is so many cosmetic products have SPF in their foundation such as Bare Essentials make up. Take it from someone who used to worhip the sun...now I've got hyperpigmentation to deal with! Not fun!
43Sunscreen is so important
44Sunscreen is so important
45yes, sunblock seems like a no-brainer to me when i get ready each morning. i'm all about taking care of & protecting my skin... and i hope it pays off when i'm older
46and, hahahaha, wow. in the link to the picture bella suggested we print out, i was kind of hoping to see a dixie wetsworth-esque photo: http://content.answers.com/main/content/wp/en/thumb/2/27/200px-Dixiewet....
mad tv... cabana chat, hehe!
47I use sunblock everyday...and I am in love with Benefit's You Rebel...which is a moisturizer with SPF 15.
Good Reminder!
48Yeah, I'm always thinking about how I should wear sunscreen but i need one with a moisturizer but i don't wanna buy one and have it be a waste of money because its greasy... Anyone know a good moisturizer/spf that is non expensive and non greasy??
49Amen! I am constantly harping on my friends and family to be better about the sun. It KILLS me when I see people not wearing any sunscreen, or wearing a very low SPF on the beach. I always tell people that I've given up on tanning, I'm going for the Nicole Kidman look
