The summer heat takes all the glamour out of having long hair, since it feels sweaty on our necks—and blow drying becomes a gut-wrenching chore. But how many of us would actually shave it all off like Mena Suvari? The cut is for her new movie Garden of Eden, but still, that takes some serious bravery! Sinead, Britney and Demi have all done it, too. Would you?

I have gone shorter and shorter with my hair, ending at a very choppy pixie not too long ago. I have had it before and loved it. Easy to take care of and manage every single day. My hair is thick natural spiral curls, anyone who has them knows to look right it takes a great deal of product and work...and if it rains of gets humid, I would just pull it up so I didn't look like bozo, haha. 6 days ago I had brain surgery, I have a good size scar and part of my head is shaved. My self esteem is low, but I feel like I may feel better to just take the rest off. Start fresh. I don't think I have a face that is too 'boyish', but I guess I don't care either. I want to heal and hopefully feel better doing it. Too many ladies are afraid if they don't look like every magazine they are no good is so bad for all of us. I will post when I finish. I have a lot of bedrest, but I hope to get help in doing it soon.

Why the hell would you be in trouble for shaving your head?! It's your head/hair! I can't believe that! It makes me so sad. My mom and I were watching the news a month or so ago and a boy got all of his friends together to shave their heads because his brother died of cancer. He said many of his friends had to back down because their parents wouldn't let them. Sorry if I sound overly dramatic, but my mouth dropped open when the boy said that and my mom shouted "You're kidding!" We couldn't even fathom someone not allowing their child to change their hairstyle. That is beyond me. Anyway, I'm 16 and I've had my hair short (maybe three inches?) for about a year now. I'm half-black and so I have curly hair. I had never had it short before, it was always a tumbling afro of tight curls, but at the beginning of last summer I told my hairdresser to cut it all off. I don't even remember why, I just like changing my hair. (I've had a long and wild afro, long chemically straightened hair, short chemically straightened hair, a small afro, etc.) Right now it's about an inch long. I'm getting my head shaved in 4 days! I can't wait.

Maybe you and your friend should have thought twice about doing such an "extreme" haircut. I'm assuming you're a teenager--wait for these decisions until you're over 18 and then you can do what you want.

Two weeks ago, I shaved my shoulder length hair completely bald on a Saturday night when my mom or dad weren't home. My friend helped me do it, and she even lathered my head and we shaved it smooth. My mom didn't see it until the next morning and then she went totally wacko about it, and so did my dad. When I went to school on Monday I got mixed reactions from my friends--I thought everyone would think it was cool, but a lot of them didn't, especially the guys who now think I'm gay (I'm not). I thought I had enough courage to do it and deal with the consequences but the reactions I'm getting make me feel sorry I ever did. I'm grounded for at least 3 months until my hair grows out to a "decent" length, my mom says. And my friend who helped me can't come over anymore.

I had a no crewcut in 1981, it was rare to experience such short hair at that time, I had never seen another woman wearing hair as short as mine before, it was fun to wear such a style

My hair is about an inch long now. I shaved it in July because I became obsessed with V for Vendetta. I love my short hair and people tell me I look like Natalie Portman all of the time..which is so nice. :)

I SHAVED MY HEAD SIX WEEKS AGO I LOVR IT SO EASY MY STAY BALD FOR THE SUMMER MY HUSBAND LOVES THE LOOK MY HAIR WAS IN THE MIDDLE OF MY BACK WHEN I DID THIS TOOK THE CLIPPERS AND SHAVED AWAY IT FEELS SO GOOD AND FREE.

I say that if you are a girl and you want to shave your head, go for it. I did, almost two years ago, for a cancer fundraiser. My hair was way past my shoulders, and mine was longer than the other women who volunteered, so I had more to lose, so I didn't decided to do it until the day of the event. My head was shaved with clippers, and the shavees got an extra donation if you let the stylists finish the job with a Bic razor, so I did. I can't describe the feeling, it's like nothing else I had ever experienced, besides being very cold! The first look in the mirror was a terrible shock. I kept looking and running my hands over my head. I couldn't believe I'd done it or that person was me. I have to warn you, some of your friends and family might not understand, you get stared at wherever you go if you don't wear a hat, which is really uncomfortable with a 1/4 inch growth, and some people want to rub your head! I had lots of difficult nights trying to sleep when the stubble started to grow out from the spiky hairs getting caught in the pillow. The worst part was when you go through the fuzzy-headed "tennis ball" stage where your hair grows every which way and you look terrible. And no matter what people say about their hair growing fast, it takes a lot longer to grow out than you think it should. It was eight months before I had a respectable pixie, and after two years my hair is still not as long as when I shaved it all off. I still say, though, if you really want to, go for it, there's no other feeling like it. But expect a long time period of being bald and getting stares from guys who think you are a lesbian. I'm glad I did it once, but I wouldn't do it again for any reason!

My college roommate got into a truth or dare with a guy friend about who would shave their heads. If one of them did, the other one would do the same. He chickened out but she didn't and one day came home bald! She shaved her head so he would have to, and his buds made him do it. She had a hard time getting used to it, but you might as well since you have no choice, and she really liked the buzzcut stage. But when she went home for Thanksgiving, her family freaked!

I went on the Semester at Sea trip, where some girls shave their as the tradition of crossing the equator. Before going I said no way was I going to do this, but when the time comes you get caught up in the spirit and I went for it. There were about 20 of us. It was great for the rest of the trip, the only problem is at the end when you're still bald and everybody at home thinks you're weird. It also took forever to grow back, but I'm glad I did it once!

When a friend of mine got cancer she shaved her head to stay in control of her looks and her body! She looked awesome!!! She didn't want the chemo to take her hair so she gave it up freely. A few of us volunteered to do it along with her but she said no and wore that shaved head like a badge of honor!!! And she beat the cancer, too!!!!!
